Anatomical Studies in Relation to Fibre Compactness and Quality of White Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this experiment fibre bearing potentiality of 17 advanced lines of white jute along with cultivar CVL-1 as check variety was assessed through studies of anatomical characters such as bark thickness, number of pyramid, area of pyramid and number of fibre bundle/layer or arc. Significant differences among the advanced lines were observed for bark thickness and area of pyramid. Previous studies indicated that these two characters are directly correlated with fibre yield. Line number 2104, 2281, 2262, 2305 and 2236 gave higher bark thickness coupled with higher area of pyramid indicating that they have higher fibre bearing potentiality.

Objectives:

To isolate higher fibre bearing potentiality genotypes through anatomical studies.

Methodology:

For studying anatomical characters 3 inches long segments was cut from the middle parts of each of the selected plant at the age of 110 days. These materials were preserved in Formalin- Aceto- Alcohol (FAA) solution (10 ml of Formalin, 5ml of 85% glacial acetic acid and 85 ml of 70% alcohol). Bark diameter, Bark thickness,Number of trapezoids/section, Area of trapezoid/section (μm), Number of layers/ trapezoid, Number of bundles/trapezoid , Length, breadth and length: breadth ratio were calculated for three plants of each accession under microscope. So, we can easily isolate higher fibre bearing potentiality genotypes through anatomical studies i.e. fibre compactness per unit area of plant bast.
