The Effect of Sulphur on the Yield and Growth of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sulphur is a major essential element and its role in plant metabolism is manifold. Now Ammonium sulphate has been replaced by urea, which is at present the principal source of nitrogen. The shortage of sulphur is apprehended in many tea estates. As we are not using any supplemented sulphur from the external source, there may be possibility of sulphur deficiency in Bangladesh tea. The other reason for sulphur deficiency in our tea soil may be attributed due to low content of organic matter in our soil. From the external observation and reconnaissance soil survey, it is observed that many old tea areas in tea garden have been suffering from sulphur deficiency. In addition many tea estates of Northern India, sulphur is being regularly used with the normal doses of NPK. For this reason, establishment of sulphur is deemed essential in Bangladesh Tea.

Achievement/Findings:

The trend of result shows that high doses of Sulphur did not show any positive response on the yield of tea, rather it showed reducing trend of yield.
