Development of a Moisture Meter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Moisture meter usually made on the conductivity variation principal, was not found suitable for measuring moisture in jute under our environmental condition. Attempt had been made to develop improved type of moisture meter based on the capacity variation principal instead of conductivity variation. The moisture meter under construction was composed of mainly three parts namely oscillator, amplifier and recorder. Of the three main parts of the moisture meter oscillator were arranged, the second part amplifier were assembled and the power amplifier was fabricated using four transistors of which two were of BD 377 types of NPN silicon transistor. A darlington pair was made each of the above types of transistor.

Methodology:

Electrical conductivity method is used to measure the moisture content in jute and jute products. The oscillator was simplified clap type oscillator which was subsequently independent of transistor parameters. This was achieved at the expense of power gain, but resulted in high output impedance across the tank circuit. To minimize the loading a low impedance secondary in the oscillator coil was used match the input impedance of the amplifier. The bridge network consists of two identical double tuned circuits. This resonant circuit in a balance bridge network determines the change in conductivity of the material under test. Small coupling capacitors to the amplifier were used to minimize interaction between the resonating circuits. After rectification their outputs were compose vertically at the macroammeter which register any imbalance. The measurement technique consists of placing a prove against the material, readjusting the bridge and acting the imbalance as indicated on the micro-ammeter scale.

Achievement/Findings:

Firstly, circuit board was prepared and thereafter, circuit arrangement of the oscillator has finished. Secondly, an amplifier circuit was designed and works accurately. The designed circuit was not final one. Altercation can be done according to the circuit requirement. So, the development work was done by trial and error method. This type of instrument can be used in the research laboratory as well as various Jute mill to measure the moisture content in jute and jute products.
