Effect of Plant Spacing and Bulblets Size on the Grwoth and Yield of Kharif Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Centre, Bogra, on BARI Piaz-2 variety during the period of September 2007 to January 2008.Widest spacing resulted higher number of leaves/plant (6.49). Individual bulb weight increased as the spacing increased. The widest spacing (20cm x 20cm) gave the heaviest bulb (55.17g) and followed by (20cm x 15cm) and 20cm x 10cm) gave 52g and (42.50g) respectively. The maximum yield (18.26t/ha) was obtain form the plots of 20cm x 15cm spacing.Bulb diameter, bulb weight number of leaves/plant and bulb yield increased with increased size of bulblets. The highest bulb diameter (5.43cm), number of leaves/plant (6.83), and bulb weight (56.11g) was recorded when 6±0.25g size of bulblets were planted. Highest bulb yield (18.62 t/ha) was recorded from the same treatment. Bulb yield decreased when bulblets of below 4±0.25g were planted Bulb diameter, bulb weight and bulb yield in kahrif onion. However, the highest bulb yield (23.15 t/ha) was obtained when 6±0.25g bulblets were planted in 20 cm x 15cm plot.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable size of bulblets and spacing to obtain the highest yield of kharif onion bulbs.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Centre, Bogra, on BARI Piaz-2 variety during the period of September 2007 to January 2008. The trial was laid out in randomize complete block (Factorial) design with three replications treatments were consisted of six size of bulblets (1g±0.25, 2g±0.25, 3g±0.25, 4g±0.25, 5g±0.25 and 6g±0.25) and three plant spacing (20cm x 10cm, 20cm x 15cm and 20cm x 20cm). The planting was done on the 20th September 2007. The unit plot size of 3m x 1.2m. The land was fertilized with cowdung, Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum at the rate of 5 tons, 260, 266, 150 and 110kg/ha, respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal split at 20, 35 and 50 days after planting, weeding, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 15th January 2008. Data were recorded on plant height, number of leaves/plant, bulb diameter, bulb weight and yield/ha. The collected data were statistically analyzed by using MATAT software and the difference between the treatment means were judged by LSD.
