Effect of Vine Planting System on the Growth and Yield of Sweet Potato Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur during November 2009 to April 20010 to find out the appropriate vine Planting system in sweet potato varieties. The treatment consisted of four varieties viz. BARI SP 6 (V₁),BARI SP 8 (V₃) , BARI 8 (V₄), and three vine Planting system viz. 1 m lone vine Planted in twist with one end exposed (P₁), 50 cm long vine Planted with both end exposed (P₂), and 30cm vine in normal Planting (P₃), Both the factors showed significantly influenced on growth and yield components. The yield did not differ significantly among varieties. The treatment P₂(50 cm long vine planted with both end exposed) appeared to be the best to achieve maximum yield.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable vine planting system for higher yield of sweet potato varieties.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur during November 2009 to April 2010 with four varieties viz. BARI, SP 6 (V₁), (BARI) SP 7 (V₂), BARI SP 8 (V₃), and BARI SP9 (V), and three vine Planting system viz. 1m long vine Planted in twist with one end exposed (P₁), 50 cm long vine Planted with both end exposed (P₂) and 30 cm vine in normal Planting (P₃). The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The crop was planted on 25 November 2009. The Plot size was 3mx3m with Plant spacing of 60 cm x 30m. The crop was fertilized with dose of 175-150-200 kg/ha of Urea-TSP-MOP, respectively with 10t/ha of cow dung. The full amount of cow dung, TSP and half of MOP was applied at the final land preparation and half of urea and rest half for MOP was applied at 30 days after Planting and rest half of urea at 45 days after Planting followed by irrigation. Data on growth, yield contributing characters and yield were collected and were analyzed statistically and means were separated by DMRT.
