The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur to characterize the 42 accessions of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek). Qualitative character variation was found in growth habit, terminal leaflet shape, leaf pubescence, pod beak shape, pod attachment to peduncle and pod shattering. Different colour variations were exhibited in hypocotyl, leaf, calyx, petiole, mature pod and seed. The highest coefficient variation was found in number of pods per plant (28.65%) and the lowest in pod length (7.72%).

To characterize the mungbean accessions and  to increase seeds for conservation

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Joydebpur. Thirty five local accessions of mungbean, one local cultivar (sonamung) and six BARI released varieties of mungbean were used. The seeds were planted in 2m long of 4 rows plot. Row to row distance was 50 cm and plant to plant distance was 30 cm. Chemical fertilizer such as urea 50 kg/ha, TSP 85 kg/ha, MP 35 kg/ha were applied during land preparation. Seeds were sown in rows on 15 February, 2012. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to have a good crop. Insecticide was applied for controlling vector. Data were recorded as per descriptors for Mungbean.

Purple (34 accessions) and green (8) hypocotyl, and semi erect (4) and erect (38) type growth habit were found among the accessions. None of the accessions showed twining tendency. Both light green (19) and dark green (23) leaf colour were found. All the accessions exhibited yellow corolla with greenish purple (38) and green (4) calyx. Ovate type of terminal leaflet shape showed in maximum (40) accessions and ovate-lanceolate in minimum (2) accessions. Very sparsely pubescent (4), sparsely pubescent (14), moderately pubescent (10) and densely pubescent (14) were found. Stem colour was light green in all the accessions. Petiole colour was purple in almost (41) accessions and the rest one was green. Raceme position was intermediate. Knob (9) and hook (33) types of pod beak shape were found. Pendent pod attachment showed in small number of accessions (5) and sub erect type was in lager number (37) of accessions. Mature pod colour was straw (31) and black (11). Pod shattering occurred in limited (9) accessions but the maximum accessions did not show pod shattering (33). Drum shape with dark green (6), light green (29), greenish-yellow (6) and yellow (1) seeds were found. Two types of luster on seed surface such as dull (10) and shiny (32) were exhibited among the accessions. Days to flowering and pod maturity ranged from 36 to 56 days and 58 to 81 days, respectively. On an average, the number of primary branches was 6.37. Number of pods per plant ranged from 21 to 78. The accessions exhibited 5.54 to 7.36 cm and 0.3 to 0.64 cm in pod length and pod width, respectively. The accessions produced 2.4 to 6.8 g hundred seed weight. The highest CV was found in number of pods per plant (28.65%) and the lowest in pod length (7.72%).
