Screening of Potato Varieties Against Nacl Salinity Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To assess the effect of salinity on potato, six levels of salinity (0, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 dS/m) were examined against some potato varieties and advanced lines at Joydebpur during 20011-12 in a pot experiment. All the paremeters studied, showed declining tendency with the increase of salinity level. More than 50% yield reduction was observed in all the varities / lines except 4.5w and Laura at the salinity 6 dS/m. The variety Laura performed better compared to 4.5w in all the salinity levels.

Objectives:

i) To determine the saline tolerant level of different potato varieties at their germination stage. ii) To study the most critical stage of potato varieties at different levels of salinity.

Methodology:

Ten potato varieties incloding advanced breeding materials namely, Asterix, lady Rosetta, Espirit, Sajitta, 7.27, 4.26 (R), Courage, Saikat, 4.5(w) and Laura were included in this experiment, Whole tuber of 28-45 mm size was planted in a pot. Ten kg soil was used in each pots six levels of Nacl solution T1 = Contorl, T2 = 4ds/m, T3 = 6ds/m, T4 = 8ds/m, T5 = 10ds/m T6 = 12ds/m. Contwere used. The experiment was set up in Complete Randomized Block design with three replications and each replication had three pots. Tubers were planted on 4 December; 2011.The pot was irrigated with Nacl solution according to the treatments. Fertilizers were applied in each pot according to the TCRC recommendtion.
