Effect of Intercropping on Mukhikachu Under Different Planting Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at TCRC, Joydebpur during March 2010 to Novebmer 2010. The treatments comprised of two planting systems viz. single row (P1) and double row (P2) and nine intercropping treatments viz. I1 = Mukhikachu + Indian Spinach, I2 = Mukhikachu + Kangkong, I3 = Mukhikachu + Bringal, I4 = Mukhikachu + Chilli, I5 = Mukhikachu + Mung bean, I6 = Mukhikachu + Bitter gourd, I7 = Mukhikachu + Okra, I8 = Mukhikachu + Stem amaranth and I9 = Sole Mukhikachu. Double row planting system (P2) showed statistically superior in the growth, yield components and yield of mukhikachu than single row planting system. Intercropping showed significant effect on most of the growth and yield parameters. The highest yield of mukhikachu (27.04 t/ha) was obtained in I8 followed by I9 (26.45 t/ha) and I1 (26.31 t/ha). The highest mukhikachu equivalent yield (50.05 t/ha) was obtained from I1 followed by T8 (45.06 t/ha). The treatment, I1 gave the highest net return (Tk 3,01,220/-) with BCR of 2.51.

Objectives:

To study the growth and yield performance of intercropping of Mukhikachu under different planting system.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Joydebpur during March 2010 to November 2010. The treatments comprised of two planting system viz. single row (P₁) and double row (P₂) and nine intercropping treatments viz. I₁ = Mukhikachu + Indian Spinach, I₂ = Mukhikachu + Kangkong, I₃ = Mukhikachu + Bringal, I₄ = Mukhikachu + Chilli, I₅ = Mukhikachu + Mung bean, I₆ = Mukhikachu + Bitter gourd, I₇ = Mukhikachu + Okra, I₈ = Mukhikachu + Stem amaranth and I₉ = Sole Mukhikachu. The eighteen treatments combination was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The plot size was 3 m × 5.4 m. The spacing of Mukhikachu was 60 cm × 45 cm for single row and 60 cm × 60 cm for double row and Indian Spinach, Bringal, Chilli, Bitter gourd and Okra was a single line in between two rows of Mukhikachu maintaining 41, 77, 45, 40, 40 cm plant to plant distance, stem amaranth was two lines in between two rows of Mukhikachu maintaining the spacing of 20 cm × 7.5-10 cm, Kangkong were continuous line sowing and Mung bean were broadcasting. The crops were planted on 21 March 2010.The Mukhikachu was harvested at 3 November 2010.
