Crop Duration Effects on Growth and Yield Contributing Components of Taro (colocasia Esculenta L. Schott)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

With an objective of determining the optimum harvesting time for increased cormel production of taro, a study was undertaken with eight treatments of crop duration having eight harvesting time i.e., 115, 135, 155, 175, 195, 215, 235 and 253 days from planting. Results Indicated that as the cropping period advances the plant growth after reaching its vigorous stage was found to cease with the development of enlarged underground cormels. The cormel production increased as the crop duration extended or in other words if harvesting is delayed. Significant higher yield was obtained when the cormals were harvested at or after 216 days of planting. However for better keeping quality of the cormeis, the harvesting can be delayad for 20 to 40 more days without hampering the higher yield.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Substaton, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Pahartali, Chittagong. The seed cormels of a taro cultrvar used in the experiment were collected from Hathazari, Chittagong. The experimental area was ploughed several times until a fine tilth is achieved. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. The corrnels were planted on January 5, at a depth of 5 cm from the ground level with a hill to hill and row to row spacing of 30 and 60 cm respectively and then ridged up. Necessary irrigations and other cultural operations were done regularly. Eight treatments of crop duration (115, 135, 155, 175, 195, 215, 235 and 255 days from planting to harvesting) were considered in the study and as such the first harvesting started from May 1 i.e, at the 115 th day of planting and at 20 days of interval the harvesting continued upto September 20 i e. at the 255th day of planting. For each treatment, data were recorded from twenty randomly selected plants per replication. The following observations were recorded from the selected plants; plant height, petiole & leaf weight, no. of leaves and suckers/ plant, no. and weight of cormels/ hill, individual cormel weight, mother corm weight and total yield (corm + cormels)/hill. Average yield/ hectare was also calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study therefore it was indicated that greater yield of cormels can be obtained by keeping the plants in the field upto 215 days. From the results of the presant study it can further be assumed that in order to have better keeping quality of the cormels the plants can be kept at the field for 20 to 40 more days without sacrificing the higher yield.
