Population Fluctuation and Species Composition of Small Mammals in Rice Agro-ecosystem at Comilla and Feni

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Comilla and Feni to assess the population dynamics and species composition of rodents in rice agro-ecosystem. Trap success inside the house (21.38%) was higher (0.44%) than the field. Bandicota bengalensis and Rattus rattus were the most common rodent species found inside the house and in the field. Mus musculus was found only inside the house and Bandicota indica was found only in the field. There was an antagonistic relationship between R. rattus and M. musculus inside the house.

Objectives:

To assess the population dynamics and species composition of rodents in rice agro-ecosystem at Comilla and Feni.

Methodology:

Four villages in Comilla district and two villages in Feni district were randomly selected for conducting this experiment during the period of August 2002 to May 2003. The selected areas were rice agro-ecosystem and more or less similar in cropping pattern. Six habitats in each village were selected for this experiment. These were house, roadside, pond side, forest area, irrigated and rainfed area. 'Kill traps' were used in side the houses and 'live traps' were used for other habitats. Twenty traps were used per night for each habitat and the trapping continued for four nights. Two villages were trapped in a week. So trapping continued for two weeks in Comilla and one week in Feni. Traps were checked every morning. Each of the captured animals was weighed, measured and autopsied for getting reproductive information.

Achievement/Findings:

Trap success Trap success in side the house was higher than field . The average trap success inside the house was 21.94% in Comilla and 20.82% in Feni. On the other hand the average trap success in the field was 0.45% in Comilla and 0.43% in Feni. Maximum trap success (4.76%) combining both field and house was recorded in December and minimum (2.53%) in May. The over all trap success in Comilla (4.02%) was higher than Feni (3.82%). Species Composition House: Only three major species of rodents were found in side the house. These were Rattus rattus (374), Bandicota bengalensis (132) and Mus musculus (467). The number of Bandicota bengalensis was lower than Rattus rattus and Mus musculus. When trap success for R. rattus increased, the trap success for M. musculus decreased . This result indicates that the interspecific competition for resources was occurring between R. rattus and M. musculus. But no similar trend was found at Fini. Field: Rattus rattus (40), Bandicota bengalensis (26) and Bandicota indica (34) were the common rodent species in the field. The numbers of Bandicota bengalensis were lower than other species. Maximum number of B. indica was captured in the Boro season i.e. November to March only. This result indicates that the Bandicota indica is the pest of Boro rice only. The numbers of B. bengalensis and R. rattus fluctuated month to month. Two other species viz. Rattus exulans and Mus booduga were also found in the field. But their number was very few.
