Participatory Variety Selection of Exotic Potato Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three exotic varieties namely, Bellarossa, Musica, Orchestra, along with check varieties BARI Alu-7 (Diamant) and BARI Alu-8 (Cardinal) in Set-I and two exotic varieties Ewelina and Labadia with check varieties BARI Alu-28 (Lady Rosetta) and BARI Alu-29 (Courage) in Set-II were evaluated in farmer's field of four different locations. In case of average yield over four locations the highest yield (47.74 t/ha) was produced by the variety Labadia followed by Bellarossa (42.88 t/ha), Musica (41.92 t/ha) and Ewelina (40.83 t/ha) and the lowest yield (35.55 t/ha) recorded in the variety BARI Alu-29(Courage). Considering size, shape and colour, farmers of all locations except Bogra showed their keen interest about the all exotic verities. Red skin colour variety Bellarossa is the first priority of Bogra farmers.

Objectives:

1. Selection of suitable varieties in collaboration with farmers and other organization

2. Assesing the farmer’s perception towards the varieties

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field of four districts, namely Munshigonj, Bogra, Jessore and Jamalpur. Three exotic varieties namely, Bellarossa, Musica, Orchestra selected from last three consecutive years (TCRC, 2010-2012) along with check varieties BARI Alu-7 (Diamant) and BARI Alu-8 (Cardinal) in Set-I and two exotic varieties Ewelina and Labadia selected from last three consecutive years (TCRC, 2010-2012) with check varieties BARI Alu-28 (Lady Rosetta) and BARI Alu-29 (Courage) in Set-II were included in the study. The unit plot size for each variety was 6m x 4m. Whole tubers were planted with a spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm. Seeds were sown from Nov. 20 to 30, 2012. Fertilizer and other management practices were followed as per TCRC recommendation.
