Determination of Crop Co-efficient Values of Wheat by Lysimeter Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The crop coefficient values of 0.42, 0.78, 1.13 and 0.48 were determined for initial, development, mid-season and late season stages of wheat (variety: Sourav). The values differed slightly from those calibrated by Islam (2004) for Bangladesh. As the lysimeter provides control environments, the values determined by this method are most dependable and recommended for estimating crop water requirement of wheat in Bangladesh.

To determine crop co-efficient values of Wheat at different growth stages.

Methodology:

Wheat seeds (variety: Sourav) were sown on 27 November 2007 in four lysimeter tanks maintaining row to row spacing was 20 cm. Also, to maintain a similar atmosphere, the same crop was grown in the entire field around the lysimeter tanks. The crop was harvested at 31 march 2006. The soil was silty clay loam with field capacity and bulk density, 28% and 1.5 gm/cc, respectively. The selected treatments were; T1= Irrigation at 20, 40 and 60 days after sowing (DAS); T2= Irrigation at 20, 50 and 80 DAS; T3= Irrigation at 20, 40, 60 and 80 DAS T4= Irrigation at 20, 35, 50, 65 and 80 DAS The micro-lysimeter contains 4 tanks, each having an area of 1.0 m x 1.0 m. Therefore, no replication of the treatments was possible. Climatic data such as, maximum and minimum temperatures, air humidity, sunshine hours and wind speed together with the location information like elevation, latitude and longitude were incorporated in the software, CROPWAT, to estimate the potential evapo-transpiration. The crop was irrigated in accordance with the design of the treatments. Measured quantity of water was applied to the tanks to ensure drainage. Soil moisture was measured at plantation, prior to each irrigation and at maturity to determine the irrigation quantity and depleted residual soil moisture. During the crop season, some rainfall occurred. Therefore, the stored soil moisture during the period under consideration and drainage amount were subtracted from the applied water and rainfall to obtain crop evapotranspiration (ETc) i.e., Then from the potential evapotranspiration (ETo) estimated for the specified period, the value of Kc for the period was determined from the ratio, ETc / ETo.
