Integrated Pest Management for Sugarcane Borers with Special Emphasis on Marigold as a Trap Crop

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effectiveness of different treatments were assessed on the basis of top shoot borer infestation 4 times and it was reflected from the results that in the month of July, Top Shoot Borer infestations were higher in control plots followed by treatments T6 (Egg mass/moth collection for destruction +Infested top cutting and T4=T3+ Chemical control (Furadan5G. In May, June and August no significant data was found. There were no TSB infestations in August except control. It was found that when marigold was planted as repellent crop with other treatment combination like egg mass destruction, infested crop cutting and uprooted or only marigold as a repellent perform better in managing TSB infestation in sugarcane field. In case of yield treatment Marigold as repellent crop gave higher (130.29 TCH) which statistically similar with T3+ Chemical control (Furadan 5G), T2+ Chemical control (Furadan 5G) and Chemical control (Furadan 5G) treatments but significantly different with remaining treatments. Lastly marigold may be recommended for use as a repellent crop to avoid the indiscriminate use of chemical insecticides that are hazardous to environment.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The trial was carried out in a farmer's field at Kaligonj, Gazipur and laid out in RCB design having 3 replications. A total of 7 treatments were T1- including control, T2-Egg mass/ moth collection for destruction, T3-(T1)+ Infested top cutting and uprooted, T4- T2+ Marigold as a repellent crop, T5- T3+ Chemical control (Furadan5G),T6- Egg mass/moth collection for destruction +Infested top cutting and T7- Chemical control (Furadan5G) were applied.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of this experiment was given indication of the trap crop and different combined methods. Selected trap crop will adjust to the other adopter components of IPM and farmers will also get extra economic benefit from marigold flower.
