Suitability of Inter Cropping Blackgram with Pigeonpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The seed yields of pigoenpea and blackgram when intercroppped under variable planting configurations were less than their sole crop yields but combined yields or equivalent yield of blackgram and pigeonpea from intercropping were more than the sole crop yield of either blackgram or pigeonpea. Significantly the highest equivalent yield of blackgram (2165 kg/ha) was obtained by uniform row (UR) of piegonpea + blackgram broadcast which was statistically similar to paired row (PR) pigeonpea + blackgram boradcast, paired row pigeonpea + 3 row blackgram and pigeonpea (60cm x 20cm) + blackgram broadcast. But the lowest (705 kg/ha) was found in PR sole pigeonpea which was statistically similar to UR sole pigoenpea. Land equivalent ratio (LER) from intercrops were increased by 50 to 80 percent over sole crop yields. The highest LER (1.8) was obtained by blackgram broadcasted with uniform row pigeonpea treatment. Cost and return analysis of the experiment exhibited that the highest gross margin (43300 Tk/ha), net return (37848 Tk/ha) and benefit cost ratio (7.94) were obtained by uniform row pigeonpea + balckgram broadcast but the lowest gross margin (14100 Tk/ha), net return (8920 Tk/ha) and BCR (2.72) were found in PR sole pigeonpea.

Objectives:

To evaluate the technological feasibility and economic viability of intercropping blackgram with short duration pigeonpea by altering the spatial arrangement of pigeonpea rows.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna during kharif-II season of 1997-98. The sowing date was September 6, 1997. Ten treatments were tested, which includes i) Sole blackgram (30cm between rows and 10cm between plants), ii) Uniform rows (UR) of sole pigeonpea (40cm between rows and 20cm between plants), iii) Paired row (PR) of sole pigeonpea (20cm between rows with intra-row 20cm distance between plants, paired rows separated from each other by 60cm ), iv) Uniform row of pigeonpea + blackgram broadcast, v) Pigeonpea (60cm between rows and 20cm between plants) + blackgram broadcast, vi) Pigeonpea (80cm between rows and 20cm between plants ) + blackgram broadcast, vii) Paired row (PR) of pigeonpea + blackgram broadcast, viii) pigeonpea UR + 1 row blackgram, ix) Pigeonpea PR + 2 row blackgram, x) Pigeonpea PR + 3 row blackgram. The cultivars used were balckgram " Barimash-1 and pigeonpea "86302". The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with four replications. No fertilizers were used in the trial. Weeding was done at 25 DAE. Monoculture and intercrops were harvested from an area of 4.0m x 3.2m. The treatments were evaluated in terms of land equivalent ratio (LER) using the formula of Willey (1981). Also, pigeonpea yields were converted into blackgram equivalent yield as per Anjeneyule et al.,1982. The recorded data were analyzed statistically and the means were separated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). All types of variable production cost were recorded to find out the benefit cost ratio (BCR). Economic analysis with respect to net return was carried out to evaluate the profitability of different treatments.

Uniform row or paried row pigeonpea + blackgram broadcast is a profitable planting system, giving the highest equivalent yield, monitory advantage and benefit cost ratio.
