Characterization of Buckwheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 4 accessions of Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Noench) at PGRC of BARI, Gazipur during 2001-2002 for characterization. The plants showed light purple and purple stem, and absent and low stem pubescent. Red-purple and yellow flower were observed among the accessions. Narrow and broad seed shape along with grayed-orange and grayed-brown seed color was also noted. All the accessions revealed purple hypocotyls, erect plant growth habit, green leaf and rounded stem shape. Plant height and number of primary branches ranged from 84.13 to 105.6 cm and 3.87 to 8.4, respectively. On an average the flowers were appeared in 32 days. Average yield was 3.55 g per plant. Variations were also observed, 6.40 to 15.0 in secondary branches, 23 to 53 days in days to 50% flowering, 99 to 103 days in maturity, 4.87 to 5.2 mm in seed length, 2.0 to 2.67 g in hundred seed weight,2.06 to 4.80 g in yield per plant, 11.1 to 14.3 % in protein and 8.47 to 9.63% moisture. The maximum CV was noted in secondary branches per plant (34.02%) and minimum in days to maturity (1.61%).

Objectives:

(i) to study the genetic variability, (ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and (iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with five accessions of buckwheat at PGRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2001-2002. Four accessions (BD-4273, BD-4274, BD-4275 and BD-4276) from Thakurgoan and one (BD-4272) from Nepal were used in this study. The seeds were sowing on 19 November 2001. Line to line distance was one meter and plant to plant distance was 10 cm. Each accession was sown in two lines. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a successful crop. Observations were recorded on 11 qualitative and 10 quantitative descriptors. Mean data on three replications were used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Qualitative variations of different characters in buckwheat are recorded.. All the accessions were showed purple hypocotyl, erect plant growth habit, green leaf and round stem shape. Absent (4) low (1) types of pubescent on stem, and light purple (4) and purple (1) stem were found among the accessions. Flower colour was recorded red-purple (4) and yellow (1), and seed colours were grayed-orange (4) and grayed-brown (1) in the accessions. Broad (3) and narrow (2) types of seed shape were observed. Range, mean, standard deviation, co-efficient of variation and confidence interval are measured. Number of primary branches per plant ranged from 3.87 (BD-4274) to 8.40 (BD-4276) where as their mean was 5.33. On the other hand, secondary branches per plant ranged from 6.40 (BD-42720 to 15.00 (BD-4276). Plant height ranged from 84.13 cm (BD-4274) to 405.60 (BD-4276) among the accessions. Days to 50% flowering appeared earlier in BD-4274 (23 days) but was late in BD-4272 (45 days). On the other hand, days to 80 % pod maturity ranged from 99 days (BD-4272) to 103 days (BD-4273 and BD-4276). Generally, mature pods were found 67 days after 50% flowering. Seed length and 100-seed weight were ranged from 4.87 cm to 5.20 cm and 3.0 to 2.67, respectively. Protein (%) was ranged from 11% (BD-4275) to 14.3% (BD-4273) where as average protein percent was 13.28%. On the other hand moisture content ranged from 8.47% (BD-4273) to 9.63 (BD-4275). Yield per plant ranged from 2.60 g (BD-4273) to 4.80 g (BD-4276). The highest CV(%) was observed in number of secondary branches per plant (34.02), followed by number of primary branches per plant (33.59) and the lowest in days to pod maturity (1.61).
