Characterization of Spinach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty-four accessions of spinach (Beta vulgaris Var. bengalensis) showed cordate, ovatoriate, rhombic, elliptical and lanceolate form of lamina, and undulate, entire and crenate types of leaf margin. Green and red pigmentation on seedling, and small and large seed size were observed among the accessions. All the accessions showed grayed-orange seed colour. Duration of green leaf stage was 39 to 48 days. On an average green leaf length, width and weight were 10.16 cm, 5.75 cm and 23.21 g, respectively. A good ranged of variations were observed in leaf length (7.38 to 19.21 cm), leaf width (4.25 to 8.54 cm), weight (15.33 to 36.0 g), and number of leaf per plant (11.83 to 22.67). Maximum CV was noted in leaf length (24.84%) and minimum in days to green leaf stage (5.76%).

Commodity:

Objectives:

(i) to study the genetic variability, (ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and (iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with twenty-four spinach accessions at PGRC, BARI during 2001-2002. The germplasm were collected from 10 districts (Gazipur, Chittagong, Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Sirajganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Pabna and Rajshahi) including two exotic (India and Pakistan). The seeds were sowing on 20 November 2001. Line to line distance was 50 cm and plant to plant distance was 15 cm. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with 2 replications. Recommended fertilizer doses, normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a good crop. Observations were recorded on 5 qualitative and 8 quantitative traits. Mean data on two replications were used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Green (20 acc.) and red (4) seedling pigmentations were found among the accessions. Cordate and ovatoriate types of lamina form were the highest in number (both 7) followed by rhombic (5) and elliptical (3) types and the lowest in lanceolate (2) type. On the other hand three types of leaf margin such as undulate (13), entire (6) and crenate (5) were noted among the accessions. Small (15) and large (9) types of seed were found. All the accessions were showed grayed-orange seed colour. Range, mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and confidence interval were calculated. Days to green leaf stage were ranged from 39 days (BD-4326 and BD-4335) to 48 days (BD-4339) among the accessions. Leaf length and leaf width were ranged from 7.38 cm (BD-4346) to 19.21 cm (BD-4345), and 4.25 cm (BD-4335) to 8.54 cm (BD-4333), respectively but their average leaf length and width were 10.16 cm and 5. 75 cm, respectively. Weight of green leaf per plant were ranged from 15.33 g (BD-4346) to 36.00 g (BD-4345) among the accessions. Maximum number (23) of green leaves were produced by BD-4333 and minimum (12) in both BD-4327 and BD-4338 accessions. Days to 50% flowering were ranged from 38 days (BD-4336) to 57 days (BD-4327) among the accessions. Maximum plant height (21.67 cm) was found in BD-4342 and minimum (11.62 cm) in BD-4330 where as their average plant height was 16.10 cm. Hundred seed weight were ranged from 1.44 g (BD-4334) to 2.35 g (BD-4327). The highest CV(%) was noted in leaf length (24.84) followed by weight of leaf per plant (23.22) and the lowest in days to green leaf stage (5.76). Maximum (2.37) and minimum (0.10) confidence were observed in days to 50% flowering and 100-seed weight, respectively.
