Characterization of Mungbean Germplasm (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred fifty-two (152) germplasm with 6 check varieties of mugbean (Vigna radiata) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2019-20. Qualitative variations were observed; deltoid 66.46% and ovate 33.54% were exhibited in the terminal leaflet shape followed by sparse 40.51%, medium 52.53%, abundant 6.96% such variation found from leafiness. Petiole length such as short 58.22% and medium 41.77%; raceme position such as mostly above canopy 45.57% and intermediate 54.43% were observed. The maximum range of the number of pods per plant was 70.72 to 1201.15 and the mean 406.21. In plant height, mean 31.54 cm and range 18.53 to 47.35cm, in the number of seed per pod ranged 5.8 to 13.74 and mean 10.42.. The maximum coefficient of variation (78.22%) was obtained in seed yield per plant followed by No. of pod per plant (65.4%), no. of primary branches per plant (24.47%). The frequency distribution was observed higher on no of primary branch/plant, Plant height, and no. of seed /pod. Unique selection and trait information are available within the population studied which may offer crop improvement opportunities.

Objectives:

The present investigation, a set of mungbean germplasm was studied for genetic variability, varietal identification and genetic diversity based on qualitative and quantitative traits.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 152 germplasm of mungbean with 6 check varieties at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur during Kharif 2019. The seeds were directly sown in prepared land dated 16 February 2019. The distance between the line to line and accessions to accession was 30 cm and 50 cm in augmented design with 6 check varieties. Measurement was performed on five individual plants of each accession. Optimum cultural practices were followed mungbean production system. Data was recorded in qualitative and quantitative traits as per pulse descriptor on International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR).

All accessions were shown the same parameter in the character's growth pattern and calyx colour. The variable data was recorded as per IBPGR descriptor parameter. Means and standard error (std. Error), standard deviations (std. Dev), minimum (Min), maximum (Max), skewness, and kurtosis are summarized in Table4. The maximum range of the number of pods per plant was 70.72 to 1201.15 and the mean 406.21. In plant height, mean 31.54 cm and range, 18.53 to 47.35cm, in the number of seed per pod range 5.8 to 13.74 and mean 10.42. Wide variation was found among the accessions in both qualitative and quantitative characters. In addition to the evaluation for agronomic traits, DNA markers will be used to study the genetic diversity present in collected mungbean to improved mungbean with desirable traits and also could search their trait of interest among the germplasm studied
