Use of Corn Gluten Meal as an Egg-yolk Colouring-agent in Laying Pullets

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Corn gluten meal was fed to laying pullets of Shaver 579 commercial layer strain aged 31 weeks. Twenty-four birds were randomly divided into two dietary treatments. Corn gluten meal (CGM) as a source of xanthophylls at 10% of the diet for 12 weeks significantly improved yolk colour. CGM did not alter internal or external qualities of eggs or performance. No mortality occurred. It is suggested that 10% CGM in a diet containing nearly 600lo corn for the laying pullets, may be used for good yolk colouration. (Bangl. aet.20A6.Yol.23, No. 2, 95-102)

Objectives:

To investigate the use of CCM as a source of xanthophyll for yolk pigmentation.

Methodology:

Collection and storage of feed ingredients: Feeding ingredients including CGM were procured from Renata Agro Industries Ltd., Bhaluka, Mymensingh' Chemical analysis of CGM: Representative samples of CGM were analyzed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), nitrogen-free extract (NFE) and total ash (TA) following the methods of AOAC (1990). Values of other ingredients were derived from recent analytical reports of Chowdhury (2003) and Dhar et al' (2007). Dietary treatments: Two diets were formulated using locally available feed ingredients. one was a control diet (T₁) and the other container CGVI (T₂). The nutrient requirements (ME' CP, Ca, P, lysine, methionine) were close to breeder's recommendations (shaver 579 Commercial Management Guide, 2003). The composition of rations is shown. Birds, horsing, feeling, husbandry and routine procedures: Shaver 579 laying pullets at 31 weeks old (n = 24) were randomly allocated in cages (53 x 36 x 43 cm) where three birds were kept for the experiment. The birds were provided with identical care and management. Birds had free access to feed and water at all times. A constant photoperiod of l'6 hours light/B hours dark was allowed throughout the experiment. Feeders were cleaned. weekly and water-bowls daily. strict hygienic measures were taken during the experimental period' Temperature" and humidity were recorded in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon. Feed intake was calculated from the amount supplied at the beginning of the week and the amount retained at the end of week' Egg production was recorded daily and eggs were weighed. Bodyweight gain, feed consumption, hen day egg production and feed conversion ratio wel calculated' During 8th and 12th weeks of study, yolk colour score was recorded by comparing with a Roche Yolk Colour (RYC) fan (F. Hoffman-La Roche-Ltd., Switzerland). other characteristics were noted simultaneouslY. Measurement of internal egg quality characteristics: Albumen indices, Haugh units and yolk indices were determined. The height and diameter of yolk and albumen were measured from three different parts by a micrometer and a slide calipers, respectively. The average values of three readings for height and diameter were substituted to the formulae calculating yolk and albumen index. Haugh unit was calculated from the weight and height of eggs as described bY Haugh (1937)'

Achievement/Findings:

The external quality characteristics of eggs laid by birds after eight and 12 weeks of supplementation of 10% CGM in the diet did not differ significantly (p>0.05). It was not possible to relate these results, since no literatures were available in this respect. It is concluded that CGM provides good egg yolk pigmentation. Use of 10% CGM in a diet containing nearly 60% corn may produce eggs with good yolk colour score.
