Genetic Divergence for Yield and Its Morphological Components of Soybean (glycine Max L. Merril)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetic divergence among 30 genotypes of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill was estimated using Mahalanobis's D² and Rao's canonical analysis. Altogether six clusters were formed. The pattern of distribution of genotypes from different geographical region into six clusters was random, demonstrating that geographical isolation may not be the only factor causing genetic diversity. Hundred seed weight and yield per plant contributed maximum to the total divergence. Cluster IV recorded the highest mean plant height. primary branches per plant, pods per plant and yield per plant. The results obtained by D² analysis were confirmed by canonical analysis.

Objectives:

To estimate the nature and magnitude of genetic diversity of 30 soybean genotypes.

Methodology:

The thirty genotypes of soybean (Glycine max L. Metrii) were grown in randomized block design with three replications at the central farm of BARl during Rabi season in 1992 and 1993. Each genotype was grown in two rows of 3m length with a spacing of 30 cm x 5 cm between rows and plants respectively. Observations were recorded on ten randomly selected plants from each plot for nine characters namely, days to 50% flowering (DF), days to maturity (DM), plant height in cm (ht). primary branches per plant (PB), effective nodes per plant (ENP), pods per plant (MP), 100 seed weight in gm (SW), yield per plant in gm (YP) and harvest index (HI). Thirty plant means over the replications were used for the statistical analysis. Genetic diversity was studied and Mahalanobis's generalize distance (D²) was extended. Tocher's method was followed for determining the group constellations. Canonical analysis was also done to confirm the results of cluster and D² analysis. Statistical analysis was carried out using IBM computer.
