Genetic Variability, Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis in Soybeans Glycine Max (l.) Merril

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighty five genetically diverse soybean genotypes showed significant variation for eight characters. All the characters were found highly heritable. High genetic advance in percentage of mean was observed for branches per plant, plant height, 100 seed weight and yield per plant. Majority of the characters showed significant positive association with yield. In most of the cases genotypic correlations were higher than the phenotypic correlations. Both direct and indirect effect of number of pods per plant and direct effect of 100 seed weight were high towards yield.

Objectives:

To understand the nature and extent of direct and indirect influence of the component characters in building up the ultimate yield.

Methodology:

Eighty five diverse soybean genotypes originated from USA, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Nigeria, Japan, Srilanka and Vietnam were included in this study. These materials were obtained from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The genotypes are diverse in nature because they showed significant variations among the characters studied and the character of 100 seed weight contributed maximum towards diversity. The experiment laid out in a randomized complete block design With three replications at the central farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during Rabi 1992-93. Each genotype represents single line of 3m length spaced 30 cm apart and 6 cm between plants. Seeds were inoculated by Rhizobium japonicum and sown continuously in each row. Weeds and pests were controlled by hand picking and by spraying insecticide Dimecron respectively as and when needed to keep the crop weed and pest free. Data on days to 50% flowering (DF). days to maturity (DM), plant height in cm (PH), branches per plant (BP), pods per plant (PP), seeds per pod (SP), 100 seed weight in gm (SW) and seed yield per plant in gm (YP) were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each genotype in each replication. Genotypic (S²g) and Phenotypic (S²p) variances were estimated. Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficients of variation were computed. Broad sense heritability and genetic advance (GA) in percentage of mean and correlation coefficients were estimated. Path analysis was done.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results obtained in the present study, it could be inferred that the number of pods per plant was the first component of yield followed by 100 seed weight. Days to maturity was the other important factor of seed yield in soybean. Therefore, due attention should be given on number of pods per plant, 100 seed weight and days to maturity during selection for higher seed yield in soybean.
