Razotobacter Population Status (2017-2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Azotobacter may have a greater role to play either as free-living organism or as Azotobacterin or other complex forms of fertilizers as substitutes of synthetic and natural nitrogenous fertilizers to alleviate nitrogen deficiency. Eight soil samples were collected from selected locations of different AEZs of Bangladesh to know the Rhizobium population at different AEZs (6 AEZs) of Bangladesh. Soil samples were collected from BARI Central Farm (AEZ-28); RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11); Codda, Joydebpur (AEZ-28); RHRS, Norsingdi (AEZ-9); ARS, Satkhira (AEZ-13); OFRD, Noakhali (AEZ-19); OFRD, Kuakata, Patuakhali (AEZ-13); OFRD, Cox’Bazar (AEZ-23). Azotobacter was grown in media and Azotobacter colonies were counted. The highest Azotobacter population (3.5 ´ 10⁵g^-1 soil) was found in soils of RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11) and the lowest population (1.0 ´ 10³g^-1 soil) was observed in Noakhali (AEZ-19).

Objectives:

To evaluate the distribution and abundance of the Rhizobium species from different AEZs of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Eight sites were selected considering 6 AEZs for collecting soil samples for Rhizobium population viz. BARI Central Farm (AEZ-28); RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11); Codda, Joydebpur (AEZ-28); RHRS, Norsingdi (AEZ-09); OFRD, Noakhali (AEZ-19); OFRD, Kuakata (AEZ-13); OFRD, Satkhira (AEZ-13); Cox’Bazar (AEZ-23). Land areas of these agro-ecological zones were recognized on the basis of hydrology, physiography, soil types, tidal activity, cropping patterns, and seasons. Representative soil samples have been collected from different crop fields of these agro-ecological zones. Soils were taken from three different places of each crop field from 0-6 inches depth and then the soils were placed in plastic bags. The plastic bags were pin holed for aeration and stored in the laboratory prior to analysis. The media was prepared for the growing of Azotobacter colonies. After serial dilution, one ml of solution was poured in a petridish having agar media. The petriplates were incubated for three days for counting Azotobacter colonies.

Achievement/Findings:

Azotobacter population was found in different numbers in different locations. The highest Azotobacter population (3.5 ´ 10⁵g^-1 soil) was found in soils of RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11) and the lowest population (1.0 ´ 10³g^-1 soil) was observed in Noakhali (AEZ-19). Further studies in soils of different AEZs of Bangladesh are needed to verify the Azotobacter population.
