Development and Release of BRRI Dhan91 for B. Aman Season in Semi Deep Flooded Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in B. Aman season. The aim of this study was to develop and release semi deep flood tolerant high yield potential rice variety for B. Aman season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR10230-15-27-7B as BRRI dhan91 for B. Aman season in 2019 for the complementary variety of Fulkori. Plant height of the variety is 180 cm with 156 days. Due to tall deep water rice variety with modern plant type it can tolerate under shallow flooded (upto 1.0 meter) condition at whole life cycle. It has kneeing ability, strong stem, moderate lodging tolerance capacity and moderate stem elongation having vegetative propagation ability. This variety showed around 1.0-1.5 t/ha higher yield than Fulkori under semi deep flooded condition.

Objectives:

To develop modern rice variety for semi deep flooded ecosystem with emphasis on good grain quality and yield potential superior to standard varieties for B. Aman season.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in B. Aman season. This variety was developed through hybridization followed by modified bulk and pedigree method. It is BR line with pedigree BR10230-15-27-7B (Tilakkachari/BRRI dhan41). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Yield Trial (OYT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trial (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety (s). Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done for on-farm evaluation of proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with local variety Fulkori. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR10230-15-27-7B as variety.
