Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the year 2018-2019.To find out the performances of nine gladiolus genotypes. It was revealed from the study that GL-004, GL-002, GL-003 and GL-001 found as promising genotypes for selection on the basis of its flower and corm characters such as attractive colour, early flowering, maximum number of florets, longest spikes and rachis, highest weight of spike, longest flower durability corm and cormel production.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of different genotypes of gladiolus in order to select promising genotypes under Jamalpur condition.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the year 2018-2019. The experimental field was manured and fertilized by adding 10 t cowdung and @ 200.0 Kg N, 50.0 Kg P, 150.0 Kg K, 20.0 Kg S, 2.0 kg B and 3 kg Zn/ha. Cowdung, P, K, B,S and Zn were applied as basal and N was top-dressed in two equal splits at 4 leaf stage and spike initiation stage. Gladiolus genotypes were collected from different places and nurseries of Jessore and Dhaka District and were given the accession numbers, GL-001, GL-002, GL-003, GL-004 , GL-005, GL-006, GL-007, GL-008 and GL-009 (Table 1). All corms were thoroughly dusted with Bavistin and planted on Rabi season 2018 at 20 ´ 20 cm spacing in 2.0 × 1.5 m sized plot. Intercultural operations like weeding, watering, spraying, etc. were done as and when necessary. Data on disease incidence was scored like: 0-1= Tolerant, 2= Moderately tolerant, 3= Susceptible, 4= Highly susceptible. The spikes were cut when lower 2-3 florets showed their blushes of colour. Corms and cormels were lifted three months after cutting flower and treated with Bavistin (0.2%) for 30 minutes to prevent incidence of leaf blight disease (Sahni, 1980 and Shah et al., 1983).

Achievement/Findings:

The data recorded on plant and flower parameters of different genotypes of gladiolus under study. The genotypes differed significantly among themselves. It was observed that GL-005 attained maximum height 122.0 cm differed significantly from other genotypes. The minimum plant height 79.0 cm was attained by GL-007. The maximum number of florets per rachis 17.50 was recorded from GL-004, GL-002, GL-003 and GL-009. Spike length is considered one of the most important characters in gladiolus and >75 cm is considered to be standard length. The longest spikes 98.6 cm were produced by GL-002 closely followed by GL-001, GL-006 and GL-005 (95.4, 90.1 and 89.5 respectively) and the spike length in other genotypes was below the standard level. Similar trend were also found in case of rachis length and spike weight (Table 2). All genotypes showed moderately tolerant against disease reaction. There was no pest incidence occurred in the field study. Data recorded in respect of corm and cormel production of ten genotypes of gladiolus are presented in Table 3. The number of corms per plant was maxiimum (3.5) in GL-007. Minimum number of corms (1.0) was produced by GL-003. GL-007 produced the maximum number of cormels/corm (33.0) followed by GL-004, GL-009 and GL-006. In gladiolus, the ability to produce corm and cormels per corm determines its rate of multiplication and is considered to be an important parameter of selection. Accordingly, GL-007, GL-004, GL-009 and GL-006 was found to be highly promising. Corm and cormel weight were also significantly influenced by genotypes. GL-007 produced maximum corm weight (87.0g). GL-007 produced highest 10 cormel weight (57.0 g) followed by GL-006 (56.0 g), GL-004 (55.0 g), GL-005 (54.0 g) and GL-002 (53.0 g).
