Effect of Liming on Cabbage and Tomato Production in Acidic Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To find out the optimum dose of lime for maximum yield of cabbage (var. Atlas-70) and tomato (var. BARI Tomato-7), the experiments were conducted at the farmer’s field of Bhaluka, Mymensingh during 2014-15. The experiments were laid out in RCBD with three dispersed replications. Three levels of limes viz.1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 t ha^-1 were tested with recommended doses of fertilizer along with 5 t ha^-1 cow dung. The results revealed that liming has significant effect on cabbage and tomato yield, which varied between 77.93 to 83.70 t ha^-1and 70.52 to 87.31 t ha^-1, respectively. Highest significant cabbage and tomato yield of 83.70 and 87.31t ha^-1 were obtained with the rate of 2.0 t ha^-1 of lime. The yield of cabbage and tomato increased with increased rate of lime up to 2.0 t ha^-1 and thereafter it declined at 3.0 t ha^-1. Considering cost and return analysis the same treatment of 2.0 t ha^-1 lime also showed the maximum gross return (Tk. 8,37,000 and 8,73,100 ha^-1) and gross margin (Tk. 5,95,000 and 6,32,100 ha^-1).

Objectives:

To find out the suitable level of lime with recommended fertilizer dose for the optimum yield of cabbage and tomato in acidic soils of Bhaluka in Mymensingh.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out in 2014-15 at the farmer’s field having acidic clay loam soils at Bhaluka upazila, Mymensingh. Three levels of limes viz. 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 t ha^-1 were tested with recommended fertilizer dose (210-75-85 and 162-50-90 kg NPK for cabbage and tomato, respectively)along with 5 t ha^-1 cowdung were applied. Generally the farmers use excessive of urea and reduced dose of phosphate and potash fertilizers however their practicing fertilizer dose as 230-6-75 kg NPK for cabbage and 180-40-80 kg NPK for tomato as well. The trials were laid out in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with three dispersed replications. Soil samples from top soil (0-15 cm depth) of the experimental plots were collected before applying lime and after the harvest of the vegetables crop. The varieties of those chosen crops were Atlas-70 for cabbage and BARI tomato-7 for tomato. The cabbage and tomato were sown on November 12, 2014 and harvested on February 05 to 13 and February 02 to March 03, 2015 respectively. The unit plot size was 4m × 3m with the spacing 60cm × 50cm and 60cm × 40cm, respectively. The intercultural operation and crop protection measures were taken as per requirement during the conduction of the experiment. The amendments of different levels of limes were done 15 days prior to crop sowing and incorporated into the soil by plowing. Data on yield of cabbage and tomato and farmers opinion were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were separated by least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance. Cost and return analysis were done based on market price of the inputs and outputs.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of 2.0 t ha^-1 of lime with recommended dose of fertilizer (T₂) produced the highest yield of cabbage and tomato in the acidic soil of Bhaluka, Mymensingh.

Maximum gross return and gross margin for both the crops were also obtained from the same treatment.
