Selection of Suitable Exotic Beef Breed (s) and Performance Evaluation of Their Crosses with Native Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Beef is very popular to the Bangladeshi consumers. But, the price of beef is tremendously increasing due to insufficient beef production and low productivity of native cattle. The Department of Livestock, Services (DLS) introduced American Brahman sire to cross local cows for increasing the production to meet up growing demands of the country. But recent studies of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute and DLS reported that Brahman crossbred bulls showed the lowest FCR (12.1) compare to BCB-1 (9.5) or RCC (9.9) (Roy et ai., 2013; Rashid et ai., 2014). Therefore, it is needed to introduce some other beef breeds along with Brahman to cross local cattle which will be more economic and viable to develop a crossbred/synthetic beef breed for Bangladesh. By reviewing the literature, BLRI selected 3 high yielding exotic beef breeds originated from temperate countries but adopted in Australia named as Simmental, Charolais and Limousin for crossing with BCB-1 as a native. Acclimatization to the climate of Australia and their faster early growth may support the target carcass weights of their crossbred bulls economically. Through this research programme BLRI procured the frozen semea of selected beef breeds from Australia following Public Procurement Rules and Ordinence-2008. As a native breed BCB-1 may has lower body weight at mature age compared to most temperate beef breeds but, still they are more promising for beef production. Thus, the present work was undertaken to produce crossbreds of the above mentioned exotic beef breed by using BCB-1.

Objectives:

To introduce some other beef breed (s) along with Brahman to cross local cattle.

Methodology:

Under this activity, the review of literature, especially the production performances of famous recognized beef breeds surrounding the country and in the world were collected from secondary sources and based on available information BLRI selected 3 candidate beef breeds named as Simmental, Charolais and Limousin for crossing with BCB-1. Under this activity, 60 frozensemenstraws of Simmental, red (20), Charolais, white (20) and Limous light wheat to red (20) were purchased in the year of 2013-14 from Australia followed by Public Procurement Rules and Ordinances-2008. The semen was preserved in liquid nitrogen and kept in BLRI AI lab for further use to support the cross breeding program. To determine the best performing exotic beef breed(s) for crossing with native cattle, a total of 36 BCB-1 heifers and cows was selected based on their pedigree, heat & calf registers. Before insemination all selected animals were checked for brucellosis. To get the crossbred calves at a time, estrus synchronization method was standardized in BLRI research herd.

Achievement/Findings:

It is an on-going research programme started from the year of 2013-14 and is supposed to continue at least for 5 years. In conclusion, it may be stated that of spring is yet to be produced to evaluate their performances but, without all the system (Tender procedure and procurement of semen) developed so far the project may not achieve its goal that we expect in the coming years.
