Multivariate Analysis in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence among 35 rice genotypes was measured by Mahalanobis D² statistics based on plant height, tiller/hill, SPAD value at flowering, panicle length, grain/panicle, grain length, grain girth, straw yield/plant, 100 grain weight, grain yield/plant. The genotypes were grouped into five clusters. Cluster V contained the largest number of genotypes. Cluster I had the lowest number of genotypes. The maximum inter cluster distance was observed between cluster I and IV and the minimum was between the cluster II and III. The maximum intra cluster distance was noticed for the cluster IV and the minimum one was found in cluster I. For the mean values, Cluster I had genotypes with highest plant height, SPAD value at flowering, panicle length, grain/panicle and lowest values with tiller/hill, grain length, grain girth, straw yield/plant, 100 grain weight, while Cluster II and cluster III had genotypes with no highest value, but showed lowest value with panicle length, SPAD value at flowering, respectively. Cluster IV included the genotypes that had highest value with tiller/hill and lowest with plant height, grain/panicle and grain yield/plant. Cluster V produced the maximum mean values for grain length, grain girth, straw yield/plant, 100 grain weight and grain yield/plant. According to the results obtained, cluster II and cluster IV might exhibit high heterosis.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during the rabi season of 2005-06 using randomized complete clock design with three replications. Thirty five genotypes of rice were chosen for the study. Twenty-one day old seedlings were transplanted in 5 m x 8 rows (10m²) plot with a spacing of 25 cm and 15 cm between and within rows, respectively. Fertilizer application and other cultural operations were done as per Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) recommendation. Data were recorded on random samples of twenty plants (excluding border plants) from each plot for plant height, tiller/hill, SPAD value at flowering, panicle length, grain/panicle, grain length, grain girth, straw yield/plant, 100 grain weight, grain yield/plant. Genetic diversity was worked out following Mahalanobis's and generalized distance (D²). Clustering of genotypes was done according to Tocher's method. All the statistical analyzes were done using GENSTAT 5 programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum heterosis will be expected using parents belonging to the divergent clusters. Ramanujam et al., and Mian and Bhal reported that the parents separated by D² value of medium magnitude generally showed higher heterosis. Choice of divergent parent(s) can be made for hybridization programme. Considering these themes cluster II and cluster V might exhibit high heterosis.
