Effect of Turmeric and Satthi Extract Against Root-knot Nematode of Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Turmetic and satthi extracts viz. S, S/2, S/10 and S/100 were evaluated on mortality of nematode juvenile in laboratory condition and five doses of satthi extract (rhizome) including control were evaluated against root-knot of brijal in pot experiment. The extract of turmeric and satthi rhizome were more toxic on mortality of juvenile in S (standard) and S/2 concentrations. The treatment S of satthi gave significantly the highest plant growth and the lowest gall incidence following by the treatment S/2.

Objectives:

To identify the effect of turmeric and satthi extract against root-knot of brinjal.

Methodology:

An experiments was carried out in the laboratory and in the glasshouse of the department of plant pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University during 1990-91 following the completely randomized design with 5 replications. Five different concentration of both turmeric (Curcuma longa) and satthi (Curcunia zedoaria) extract were tested on mortality of juvenile in laboratory and only satthi extract were evaluated against root-knot caused by M. javanica in pot experiment. To prepared the standard solution 25g of sample were macerated in a blender, soaked in 100 ml distilled water, centrifuged and filtered through filter paper. These filters were termed as standard "S" (Mohanty and Das, 1988). Different dilution (S. S/10 and S/100) of each standard were made with juveniles were transferred to 10 ml extracts (per petrideshes (60 mm diameter) at various dilutions following the method described by Alam (1987). Control petridishes contained distilled water. Mean percent mortality of juvenile were counted under steriomicroscope after 12, 24 and 48 hours of juvenile transferred.
