Comparative Water Management and Economic Performance Study of Wet Seeded Versus Transplanted Method of Rice Cultivation in Boro Season-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BRRI and IRRI has taken a collaborative research program on water management for WSR system in two selected climatologically zones of Bangladesh such as Gazipur (central zone having moderate climate) and Thakurgaon (northern zone having dry climate) where rice is being intensively cultivated under DTW system. Water treatments were: T₁=farmers’ traditional method (3-5 cm standing water), T₂=saturation condition and T₃=intermittent irrigation (5 cm water was applied after 3 days of disappearing of standing water). WUE and IE are higher both in Gazipur and Thakurgaon under saturated condition and intermittent irrigation. Under standing water condition, WUE and IE were lower than other treatments in all areas. Gazipur soil was silty clay and that of Thakurgaon was sandy loam. Therefore, S&P rate at Gazipur was lower which causes higher WUE and IE than Thakurgaon. WSR yielded about 1 t/ha higher from both the study area. The partial budget analysis showed that the net return were derived Tk.108/ha from Gazipur and Tk.3255/ha from Thakurgaon. Less net return from WSR was in Gazipur because of higher weeding cost needed as compared to Thakurgaon.
