Opportunities of Farm Pond Utilization in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh:rabi Season-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A program has been undertaken to identify ponds and farm reservoirs which can result numerous benefits as: a) it can be used for multipurpose including irrigation; b) rain water harvesting by storing runoff and increasing groundwater recharge; and c) providing new employment for the poor. Water supply for irrigation from ponds and farm reservoirs has some potential comparative advantage over irrigation by tubewells and rivers. A survey was conducted in 153 villages under 14 unions of Dumuria thana in Khulna district during 1995. Total cultivable lands of the selected 153 villages were 40106 ha and average cultivable land is 262 ha per village. Total number of ponds and farm reservoirs in these villages are 7191. Average number of ponds and farm reservoirs are 406 and 1548 sqm, respectively. In rabi season, 16.74% cultivable area was used for different crops. Rice, wheat, pulses and other crops (sesame, vegetable, onion, garlic, chili etc) were grown in rabi season. Rice was cultivated in 4493 ha, which was 11.2% of the total cultivable land of 153 villages. Wheat, pulse and other crops were cultivated in 0.37, 0.68 and 4.49%, respectively of total cultivable land. Ninety seven percent of cultivable area was irrigated condition. Among them full, full+ supplemental and supplemental irrigation covered 35, 30 and 35%, respectively. Water supply from surface, groundwater and mixed of surface+ groundwater contributed 55, 9 and 36%, respectively. LLP, swing basket and don were used for lifting water from surface water (river, pond and farm reservoir) source and shallow tubewell (STW and hand tubewell (HTW) were used for pumping water from groundwater source.

Methodology:

A program has been undertaken to identify ponds and farm reservoirs which can result numerous benefits as: a) it can be used for multipurpose including irrigation; b) rain water harvesting by storing runoff and increasing groundwater recharge; and c) providing new employment for the poor. Water supply for irrigation from ponds and farm reservoirs has some potential comparative advantage over irrigation by tubewells and rivers such as: a) high quality water for crop production b) available to smaller landholders and c) more reliable access to the water as it is less dependent on electrical or mechanical failures or fuel shortages. A survey was conducted in 153 villages under 14 unions of Dumuria thana in Khulna district during 1995. Total cultivable lands of the selected 153 villages were 40106 ha and average cultivable land is 262 ha per village. Total number of ponds and farm reservoirs in these villages are 7191. Average number of ponds and farm reservoirs are 406 and 1548 sqm, respectively.
