Cotton Suitability Assessment in Nakla Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nakla Upazila is situated between 24^o53' & 25^o02' N latitude and 90^o07' & 90^o16' E longitude covering an area of 17,392 hectares. This Upazila consists of 1 porashova, 9 union and 88 mouza. Per capita land availability is only 0.09 ha. This Upzila is divided into three physiographic units namely Piedmont Plains (1.%), Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (79.8%) and Active Brahmaputra Floodplain (10%). Total cultivable land in this Upazila is 14,500 ha. Highlands are distributed in Ganapoddi (560ha), Nakla (351ha), Urfa (517ha), Baneswardi (668ha), Gouradar (250ha), Talki (528ha), Chondrokona (678ha), Pathakata (851ha), Ostodhor (714ha) union and in Pourashova (458ha). Total cotton suitable high land area is 5,575 ha. Drainage of intermittently drained soils need to be improved by providing drainage channels in the fields. At present cropping pattern in high lands are annual crops (papaya/banana/sugarcane/ginger/turmeric); Rabi vegetables vegetables; Rabi vegetables-Jute-T.Aman; Boro/wheat-Jute-T.Aman; Rabi vegetables/Rabi crops-Til/B.Aus/Jute. Farmers need to be trained on techniques of cotton cultivation, harvesting, processing and marketing.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A draft photo-interpretative soil and landform map is prepared by analyzing aerial photos of 2010. Semi-detailed soil survey is carried out to delineate highlands in Nakla Upazila. Soil and land types are checked during field survey. Land use data are recorded. Soil samples are collected @ one sample per 50-100 hectares of highland. Final cotton suitability map is prepared by accommodating field observations. Report on cotton suitability is prepared by compiling field data. The work started on 01-11-2014 and ended on 03-09-2015.
