Investigation of Lameness in Dairy Cows in Different Regions of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A clinical study was carried out to determine the lameness with their etiological factors in 2433 cows in the districts of Naogaon and Sirajgonj in Bangladesh. The percentage of lameness (permanent and temporary) in investigated population of cows was 11.5. The major form of diseases associated with lameness were hemorrhage of the sole horn (0.86%), upward patellar fixation (0.33%), ephemeral fever (7.40%), swelling of the hock and knee joints (0.12%) overgrown hoof (0.21%), hoof crack (0.45%), obturator paralysis (0.16%), arthritis (0.29%), joint dislocation (0.21%) and other illness (1.48%). The occurrence of temporary lameness (92.50%) was found to be higher than the permanent lameness (7.5%) in dairy cows. Hip dislocation, obturator paralysis and hemorrhage of the sole horn were the most severe form of lameness among the diseases caused lameness in dairy cows. Concrete floor, irregular surface floor or brick soling were considered to be the predisposing cause of hemorrhage of the sole horn, swelling of joints, hoofs cracks and arthritis.

Objectives:

To determine the occurrence of lameness with the associated diseases and factors in dairy cows.

Methodology:

This study was carried out in 2433 dairy cows of different dairy farms and Veterinary hospitals in the districts of Naogaon (Manda) and Sirajgonj (Shahzadpur) during two years period from January 1994 to December, 1995. Description of each animal (age, breed, body weight) and managemental practices (feeding, housing and exercise) were recorded. The diagnosis of lameness was based on the history, clinical findings, exercise, palpation, percussion, exploration, manual manipulation, and extension and flexion of the joints as described by Greenough et al. (1972) and Clackson and Ward (1991).
