Management of Nursery Diseases of Citrus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Management of nursery diseases of citrus was carried out by using seven treatments viz. T₁= BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil @ 2%, T₂= BAU- Bio fungicide applied as foliar spray @ 2%, T₃= BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil as well as foliar spray @ 2%, T4=0.2 % Bavistin applied as foliar spray, T₅= 0.2 % Dithane M-45 applied as foliar spray, T₆= 2% BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil and 0.2% Bavistin applied as foliar spray and T₇= Control. Regarding % plant infected and % leaf infection / plant with canker disease of citrus variety kagozi lebu ranged from 38.9 % to 66.7 % and 6.6% to 15.2% as well as in citrus variety alachi lebu ranged from 2.8 % to 52.8 % and 0.1% to 1.9%, respectively. BAU- Bio fungicide and Bavistin were found superior for controlling canker disease of citrus when BAU- Bio fungicide applied in soil @ 2 % and Bavistin @ 0.2 % applied as foliar spray. Percent plant infected and % leaf infection / plant with scab disease of citrus variety kagozi lebu ranged from 2.8% to 11.1% and 0.01% to 0.8%, respectively, where in citrus variety alachi lebu ranged from 2.8 % to 16.7 % and 0.01% to 0.4%, respectively. In die-back disease of citrus variety kagozi lebu, % plant infected and % twig infected / plant ranged from 2.8 % to 36.1% and 0.4 % to 11.1%, respectively and in citrus variety alachi lebu ranged from 2.8 % to 16.7% and 0.01% to 1.1%, respectively. Out of the control measures employed, BAU- Bio fungicide and Bavistin were found superior in controlling the diseases of citrus.

Objectives:

2. To find out suitable management strategies in controlling the nursery diseases.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the field laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 2010 to November, 2011. For the control of nursery diseases of citrus seven different treatments were employed on two citrus varieties viz. kagozi lebu and alachi lebu. The treatments were: T₁= BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil @ 2%, T₂= BAU- Bio fungicide applied as foliar spray @ 2%, T₃= BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil as well as foliar spray @ 2%, T₄= 0.2 % Bavistin applied as foliar spray, T₅= 0.2 % Dithane M-45 applied as foliar spray, T₆= 2% BAU- Bio fungicide applied in the soil and 0.2% Bavistin applied as foliar spray and T₇= Control. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The data were recorded at an interval of 30 days on total number of leaves/plant, number of diseased leaves/plant, % diseased leaves/plant for different diseases viz. canker, scab and die-back diseases of citrus. % leaf area diseased/plant in canker and scab and % twig infected/plant in die-back disease and number of branches/plant were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of the control measures employed, BAU- Bio fungicide was found superior for controlling the diseases of citrus. Under the present research program, it has been observed that there was a great fluctuation of incidence and severity of the diseases in citrus. From the findings of the present study it may be concluded that BAU- Bio fungicide may be used as a bio control means of plant disease control, but further investigation for at least another year need to be continued for confirmation of the study.
