Suitability of Tractor Mounted Pto Driven Boom Sprayer for Bangladesh Agricultural Sector

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A tractor mounted PTO driven boom sprayer was designed and constructed in the department of Farm Power and Machinery. A spiral type hydraulic nozzle was designed and developed in the departmental machine shop. The performance study was carried out in the field and in the work shop. The combined effect of pump pressure and nozzle size significantly influenced the output of nozzle. The spray pattern and distribution of drops were observed. The volume median diameter of spray spectrum was approximately 100-200 un. The field capacity of the sprayer was 3.42 ha/hr and 153 litre of water was required for spraying one hectare land. The total manufacturing cost and the operating cost/ha were. Tk. 4770.00 and Tk. 180.70 respectively.

Objectives:

i) To design and development of a tractor mounted boom type sprayer.

ii) To study the performance of the sprayer

Methodology:

A tractor mounted boom sprayer was used in the experiment. This sprayer was developed in the department of Farm Power and Machinery. It consisted of a centrifugal pump and pesticide tank. This sprayer was supported by the tractor through it's three point linkage system. The pump was run by pto (rpm= 540+ 10) and a set of spur gears. Ten nozzle were used in the boom. The spacing between the nozzles and hight of spraying were 61.5 cm and 62 cm respectively. The height of the boom can be changed by controlling the height of linkage from the travelling surfaces. The height of the boom depends on the height of the crop to be sprayed. The capacity of the pesticide tank was 2000 litre. Gravitational flow was allowed to feed the centrifugal pump. The pump delivered the spray liquid to the boom for spraying. The pressure in the liquid pressure. The measurements of field capacity were carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. The forward speed of the tractor was determined by knowing the distance travelled at a particular time and the gear position. Fuel consumption was recorded for the analysis of operating cost. The flow rate through each nozzle was measured by using a graduated cylinder. The volume of sprayed liquid required per unit area (1/ha) and field capacity (ha/hr) were calculated. The number of drops per unit area was counted by photographic method 3.4 M.S pipe of 2.54 cm diameter and nozzle made of brass were used for the fabrication of the sprayer. The design of the nozzle is shown in figure 4. Photocromatic filter papers of diameter 2.5 cm were attached at different heights of the plant. The spraying was done keeping the nozzle at a height of 50 cm above the crop. After spraying, the spray deposition was reclaimed by fluorometric method.

Achievement/Findings:

1) The spacing of the nozzles on the boom and height of spraying can be selected according to the height and density of crops in the field.

2) The flow rate can be controlled according to the requirement on the type of crop to be sprayed.

3) The precision tools for making nozzles were not available in the departmental workshop. As a result, precision nozzle could not be manufactured for which flow rate was not uniform.
