Preliminary Studies on Primary Production of the Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A preliminary estimation of the primary production of surface level water of Kaptai reservoir was attempted. The gross energy production ranged from 441.7 to 1956.4 Kcal m^-2 yr^-1 while the average gross carbon production was 135 g m^-2 yr^-1. The maximum production was recorded during monsoon and minimum during postmonsoon to pre-winter months. Primary production showed an strongly negative correlation (r = - 0.88 < 0.001) with reservoir level.

Objectives:

To estimate the preliminary of the primary production of surface level water of Kaptai reservoir

Methodology:

Productivity measurements were initiated in April, 1988 an continued till March, 1989. The sampling was done twice a month at Rangamati station by employing the 'Light and dark bottle' technique Benton and Werner (1965) and period of incubation was 24 hours. The results obtained from the winkler titration of the light and dark bottles were extrapolated using a productivity coefficient of 3.51 Winberg (1960) to calculate the energy production (Kcal). Data on water level were collected from hydroelectric power project at Kaptai. Water transparency was measured by Secchidisk visibility method. The plankton biomass, organic matter and carbon production were also estimated on the basis of gross O₂production (g m^-2 d^-1) using the following formulae : Carbon = g⁰2 x 0.375 (g), Organic matter = g⁰2 x 0.69 (g), Plankton biomass = g⁰2x 3.3 (g).

Achievement/Findings:

This is attributable from the higher production of gross organic matter (244.55 g m^-2yr^-1) and plankton biomass of the resrvoir (l.17 kg m^-3 yr^-1). From the findings it can. thus. be concluded that the Kaptai reservoir belongs to a mesotrophic to eutrophic lake. Nevertheless. further thorough investigations are necessary on this line.The gross energy production ranged from 441.7 to 1956.4 Kcal m^-2 yr^-1 while the average gross carbon production was 135 g m^-2 yr^-1.
