Development of a Manually Operated Field Cum Orchard Sprayer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A manually operated. roll-on 4-wheels and low cost sprayer was designed arid fabricated, and its performance was tested in the laboratory and in the field. The sprayer can be used in field crops as well as in orchards by using interchangeable nozzles. A maximum pressure of 20 kgf/cm² was developed In the pressure chamber which was found to be suffictent for atomization of the intended spray liquid. The field capacity for field crop spraying was 0.448 ha/hr at 4 kgf/cm² pressure and 110⁰ spray angle. A maximum height of 8 m was covered by the orchard nozzle at a pressure of 10 kgf/cm² and 60⁰spray angle. The field capacity for orchard sprayer was found 0.508 ha/hr. The deposition and drift were recorded for different targets under field and laboratory conditions.

Objectives:

The specific objectives of the study were:

(i) To develop a field cum orchard sprayer.

(ii) To measure the spray distribution pattern in laboratory condition.

(iii) To measure the deposition and drift In laboratory and field conditions.

Methodology:

A prototype of the sprayer has been designed and developed in the workshop or the department or Farm Power and machinery in collaboration with private workshop of Mymensingh town. The materials (M. S. sheet, G. I. pipe. hose pipe, etc.) required for the manufacture of the sprayer have been purchased frail the local market, BSF (Brilliant Sulpho Flouvine) materials have been purchased from Dhaka.

Design and Fabrication of the Sprayer: Determining Design and Fabrication, Pressure chamber, pump unit, control valves, nozzle, operating principle, Experimental Procedures was done.

Achievement/Findings:

The following conclusions are outlined based on the laboratory and field performances:

The design of the sprayer is simple and can be manufactured from locally available materials in any small engineering workshops.
This sprayer has provision of changing different types of nozzle having different spray angles and throughput rates.
The field capacity for ground crop spraying is 0.449 ha/hr at a spraying height of 0.5 m and 110⁰ spray angle and for orchard spraying is 0.508 ha/hr at 60° spray angle.
A pressure rise upto 20 kgf/cm² is possible to develop in the pressure chamber which will make the sprayer suitable for spraying in field and horticultural crops.
