Toxicity of Diazinon to the Fry of Indian Major Carp Cirrhlna Mrigaia (hamilton)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Static bioassays were conducted for 168 hr to determine the LC₅₀ of diazinon to the Indian major carp, Cirrhina mrigaIa Hamilton fry for different exposure times. Groups of fry (mean weight 1.87 g. SD ± 0.172) were exposed to seven concentrations of diazinon. The 24. 48. 72. 96. 120. 144. and 168 hr LC₅₀'S for exposure to diazion decreased from 1.399 to 0.739 ppm. Differences between the median lethal concentration for different exposure times were insignificant (p > 0.05).

Objectives:

To evaluate the toxicity of Diazinon 60 EC and determine the LC₅₀ values on the fry of the Indian major carp Cirrhina mrigala (Hamilton) at different concentrations and exposure periods.

Methodology:

Fry (mean weight 1.87 g, SO ± 0.172) of the Indian major carp, C. mrigala were obtained from the Riverine Station, Fisheries Research Institute, Chandpur nursery. The fry were acclimatized once for 15 -20 days at 27 ± 2°C in a 3000 litre cemented tank before the test and fed with an artificial diet containing rice bran, wheat bran, mustard oil cake and fish meal. Before starting the experiment they were kept in a 500 litre fibre glass tank for 48 h without feeding.Commercial grade Diazinon 6-EC (0, 0-diethyl-0-2-isopropyl-6-methyl pyrimidin 4-yl phosphorothionate) collected from the local market was used as test chemical for the present study. The dose of diazinon was determined on the basis of "active ingredient". The required amount of the liquid pesticide was measured out by a micropipette and diluted with distilled water in a glass jar to obtain the desired dose concentration. The test chemical was poured directly into the water of the test aquarium. Analysis of the physico-chemical characteristics of the water in the test and control aquaria were carried out according to the methods of APHA (1980). The median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) values and their 95% confidence limits for different exposure times were calculated by using the trimmed Spearman-Karber method and a computer programme developed in GW-basic 3.20. Tests for significant differences were carried out between LC₅₀ values using the method of AFHA (1980).
