Impact of Green-manuring on Soil Salinity Management and Crop Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sesbania cannabina was grown on 5 different plots and adjacent 4 plots were kept fallow for comparison. Soil Salinity for topsoil (0-15 cm) was monitored for all the plots. After 60 days green manure yield was calculated and incorporated by a tractor plough. Two adjacent green manured plot + two plots close to that (without green manuring) were selected and the second phase of the experiment laid in a RCB designed quarduplicated form. Soil salinity was monitored upto hearvest for all plots. It was observed that the topsoil salinity remains fairly low in the green manured fields and Green manuring increases crop yield at all fertilizer levels and is higher with higher lavel of fartilization.

Objectives:

To transplant HYV rice, observe the rice yield and soil salinity with and without green manuring.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Charbaggardona research plot during April- November, 1986. 9 plots in Charbaggardona research plot (plot Nos. 2,4, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19) was selected and Sesbania was grown on 5 plots viz. plot No.4, 9, 12, 16, 17, Land preparation was done by 4 crossploughing and laddering with bullock plough. Sesbania seeds @ 30 kg/ha was broadcast before final laddering on 18.4.86. To soil (0-15 cm) salinity of all the 9 plots was recorded ( 3 samples from each plot averaged)-at I, 30 & 60 DAS. Sesbania yield was recorded at 60 DAS by taking sample cropcut 1 M² from 4 spots of each plot selected at random. Plant were incorporated with the soil during 60-62 DAS by a tractor. 20 days after incorporation on 10. 7. 86, 30 days old seedling of BR-11 variety was transplanted with a spacing of 20 x 15 cm with 2-3 seedling/hill.
