Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three manual pumps namely, Diaphragm pump (BRRI pump), Treadle pump and Rower pump were evaluated in the farmers’ field. The average discharges were 3.89, 1.07 and 1.40 lit/s for the BRRI, the Treadle and the Rower pumps respectively at 1.12, 1.12 and 1.05 meter operating heads. At full cost basis, the irrigation cost for rice cultivation by the BRRI pump was Tk. 8,162/ha. The irrigation costs were Tk. 18,498 and 26,285 per ha by the Treadle and the Rower pumps respectively. If the labour wages are ignored, the irrigation cost for 1 ha rice area were Tk.1,650, 1,137 and 1,960 by the BRRI, the Treadle and the Rower pump respectively. On the other hand, the irrigation cost by the power pump was Tk. 2,053/ha only. The BRRI pump could be the most suitable one though its repair and maintenance cost is high. The treadle and the Rower pumps might be suitable for vegetable crop as their discharges are low.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Three pumps viz. (i) the BRRI pump, (ii) the Treadle pump and (iii) the Rowe pump were selected for the study. Site selection: Two types of sites viz. a) the research site and b) the demonstration site were selected to conduct the study. In the Boro season, three research sites we selected to evaluate the performance of the pumps. The sites were Joralganj and Korerhat villages under Mirersarai upazila, in Chitgagong district and Horipur village under Chagolnaya upazila in Feni district. The farmers of the sites managed all the production inputs except the irrigation which as provided by the project personnel with manual pumps. Following points were considered for the selection of research sites:It should be located near a surface water source;Water should be available within 3m head during the dry season andThe land owner should be real farmers who can afford all agricultural inputs in time. In each of the research sites, three separate plots were selected for irrigation by the three manual pumps according to crop need.Socio-economic survey: A survey questionnaire was developed to collect information on the socio-economic status of the farmers. Altogether 101 farmers were interviewed of which 25 from Joralgong, 42 from Horipur, 24 from Korerhat and 10 from Kadla villages.

Achievement/Findings:

Surface water level in different parts of the Muhuri Irrigation Project (MIP) varies from 0.85 to 1.58 m. This implies that there is a great potential for the efficient use of different manual pumps where the power pumps are not economical. Discharges of BRRI pump were higher than those of the Treadle and the Rower pumps in all the research sites.Irrigation cost buy the BRRI pump was the lowest among the three pumps. The irrigation by the Treadle and the Rower pumps were much more costly than BRRI pump. If the labour wages are ignored, the irrigation cost for one hectare or rice field were Tk. 1,650, 1,137 and 1,960 by the BRRI, the Treadle and the Rower pumps respectively. The irrigation cost by power pump was Tk 2,053/ha on the full cost basis but the cost was Tk 2,032/ha on the basis of custom hire.Results revealed that most of the farmers belong to the 0 to 0.5 ha land holding class and they used family labour in their agricultural activities. BRRI pump may be popular among the farmers, if a 50% subsidy on the price of the pump is ensured.
