Assessment of Existing Environmental Condition and Formulation of Strategy for Extraction of Mineral Stone and Sand at Jaflong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jaflong, a beautiful panoramic location of Sylhet, the north-eastern division of Bangladesh is considered as one of the attractive tourist spots of Bangladesh where an enormous amount of good quality stone and sand are available in ample amount that are carried by river water from upstream of North-eastern Indian state Meghalaya. Due to the high compressive strength, these stones and sand of Jaflong are extensively used in the construction works; obviously Jaflong is also considered as one of the best sources of construction materials. The existence of such naturally available stones is also a good cause of natural beauty there that attracts a good number of tourists. Unfortunately, due to the unremitting and continuous extraction of stone and sand from Jaflong area in unplanned and shocking way without the application of inadequate technical know-how, the overall natural beauty and future of tourism are in front of extinction. Also the water flow of the river dawki in Bangladesh is being changed along with the increment of river width due to the construction of Groins in the part of India. Overall situation causes severe danger and risks to the local people. In this connection a study has been conducted where an attempt has been taken to assess the existing environmental condition of Jaflong that is sanctified by the continuous existence of construction materials.

Objectives:

1. Assessment of existing environmental condition of Jaflong stone crushing area, and 2. The formulation of the strategy for future extraction of sand and stone of Jaflong in a sustainable way.

Methodology:

To conduct the study, Jaflong, Sylhet was the location for this study. Field observation, data collection and standard analysis were followed. For field observation extensive site visits are carried out by both of the researchers and research assistants. It includes identification of the position of past, present and future river courses, extraction of an overall view on the life of labors and workers in extraction and crushing activities. Data was authentically collected based on survey, interviewing, case studies etc. Study area was visited several times by the members of the research team to know the existing condition. In depth interviews were taken from the people of different sectors like labor of stone crushing & collecting, boatman, owner of stone crushers, local people of other professions than stone extraction and crushing etc. Finally existing environmental parameters and activities were analyzed by checklist and matrix method. Different problems associated here are explained with suitable figures.

Proper Governmental initiative is very important to increase the activities at Jaflong. In parallel if private organizations come forward then it will put more positive impact over employment. In this regard public-privateprivate partnership can be good model approach for sustainable development of stone-sand extraction and stone crushing process in the Jaflong area. Adequate management in the extraction of stone and sand along with proper sanitation and planned tourism will certainly have an overall good influence over the country’s economy.
