The Influence of Foliage Clipping on the Growth and Yield of Rainfed Lowland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was conducted to investigate into the effects of leaf clipping on growth and yield of rainfed lowland rice during 1992. The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute research farm. Three leaf clipping treatments) control-no clipping; ii) single clipping; and iii) double clipping were followed by two rice cultivars –BR22 and Naisar Sail using a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. Leaf clipping reduced leaf area index, plant height and total dry matter production. There was no significant effect of treatments on grain yields and there was no interaction between cultivars and leaf clipping treatments with respect to grain yield. The results suggest that leaf clipping may be done to supplement cattle feed during the wet season when there is crisis of fodder. The technique is also a safe one for controlling rice Hispa since clipping does not affect grain yield. However, clipping must be done before maximum tillering stage.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of leaf clipping on the growth of two T. aman rice cultivars

Methodology:

Design and treatments: The response of two cultivars of rice BR22 and Naisar Sail (N. Sail) to leaf clipping were investigated using a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The cultivars are photoperiod sensitive. BR22 is a HYV and N. Sail is a local improved variety. Three leaf clipping treatments were: i) Control (no clipping); ii) Single clipping at 55 days after transplanting (DAT); and iii) Double clipping at 36 and 55 days after transplanting. Leaves were clipped by a scissor from about 3 cm above the flag leaf base. The green clipped leaves were collected to estimate forage yield. Measurements and analysis: Fresh herbage production was estimated from the clipped leaves of the whole plots (which received leaf clipping treatments). For estimation of grain yield 6m area were harvested from the middle of each plot and grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Leaf area was measured using and area meter. For leaf area measurement samples of 5 hills from each plot were selected. The same samples were used to estimate total dry mater (TDM) production. Plant height was measured from 5 randomly selected plants from each plot on 18 November.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no significant difference in yield associated with either leaf clippings or cultivars. Neither was there any significant interaction between cultivars and leaf clipping treatments. However, averaged over two cultivars, leaf clipping reduced grain yield by about 10%. Single and double clippings gave very similar grain yields.

Herbage production

In both single and double clipping treatments N. Sail gave more herbage yield than BR22.

Leaf Area index (LAI)

Since there was no significant cultivar difference with respect to LAI, the mean values of two cultivars were compared. Control treatment (no clipping) always gave the highest LAI which reached its peak, about 3.5 at 56 at 56 DAT. Double clipping resulted in the lowest LAI up to 66 DAT and afterwards remained similar to that of single clipping. The differences in LAI among the clipping treatments were statistically significant up to 66 DAT, although the control treatment gave higher LAI throughout growth. It was concluded that leaf clipping can be safely done without any adverse effect on grain yield provided clipping is done before maximum tillering stage. Leaf clipping can also be used to supplement nutritious cattle rations in the wet season when there is usual fodder crisis.
