Pathological Investigation of Liver of Slaughtered Cattle in Dinajpur District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was done in pathological conditions of the liver of cattle from different slaughterhouses in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh September 2009 to August 2010. The liver samples were collected after gross examination from different slaughterhouses. Livers exhibiting gross alterations were cleaned with normal neutral saline and the changes were recorded. The lesions containing tissue samples were persevered in 10% formalin for histopathology. The prevalence of fascioliasis was showed highest (65.78%), followed by hydatidosis (25.67%), Cirrhosis (9.86%), amphistomiasis (5.26%) and abscess (3.95%), respectively. Because of their zoonotic nature, the observed high frequency of fasciolosis and hydatidosis, infections is thought to pose a public health risk among consumers.

Objectives:

1. The aim of the present study was to identify the pathological conditions affecting the liver of slaughter cattle at Dinajpur district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A study was carried out during September, 2009 to August, 2010, at the Dinajpur district of Bangladesh to investigate the pathology of liver of slaughtered cattle. A total of 152 samples of cattle livers were collected from different slaughterhouses and brought to the Pathology Laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University for examination of postmortem defects. Livers exhibiting gross pathology were cleaned with normal neutral saline and the changes were recorded. The lesion containing tissue samples were collected in 10% formalin for fixation. The fixed tissues were subjected for histopathological study as per standard protocol. The pathological conditions of liver were diagnosed following standard method. Parasites present in the liver were collected and examined in fresh state and then washed with normal saline followed by distilled water (several times) and then kept in formaldehyde - glacial acetic acid- alcohol (AFA) solution.

Achievement/Findings:

Parasitic diseases and other pathological conditions were the major causes of liver condemnation at Dinajpur district of Bangladesh, which may also reflect the economic losses. To mitigate the economic and public health impacts proper deworming programmes coupled with good animal husbandry would likely be effective in lowering their incidence.
