Response of Different Organic Matters in Strawberry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh during the period from June 2011 to March 2012 for the evaluation of the performance of strawberry to different organic matters. Organic matters viz. OMc (Control), OMcd (Cowdung), OMvc (vermicompost), OMpl (poultry litre) were exploited on the experiment and was outlined in Complete Randomized Design with five replication. Maximum fruits number (19.2/plant), fruit weight (14.4 g), total fruit weight (282.8 g/plant), brix percentage (10.2%) were found from OMvc whereas least in OMc. Considering overall performances, study suggested that vermicompost as a potential source of plant nutrients for sustainable strawberry production and has an admirable possibility for organic strawberry production.

Objectives:

To assess influence of different organic matters on performance of strawberry regarding growth, yield and quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was accomplished at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from June 2011 to March 2012 to evaluate the performance of organic matters for strawberry. Organic matters viz. OMc (Control), OMcd (Cowdung), OMvc (vermicompost), OMpl (poultry litre) were used on the experiment. Strawberry plantlets were collected from SAU Horticultural farm. Pots were filled up 7 days before transplanting on 12th October 2011. Cowdung, vermicompost and poultry litter were exerted to pots and these were exploited @ 1 kg/pot on the experiment. Chemical fertilizers were not used on experiment. Experiment was provoked in Completely Randomized Design with five replications. The size of each pot was 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter and 20 cm (8 inches) in height. Data were collected on number of runner, number of stolon, plant height, leaves number, leaf area, days to first flower bud initiation (visual observation), days to first flowering, days to first fruit set, days to first fruit harvest, no of flowers/plant, no of fruits/plant, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter and percentage of brix. Runners were not counted and all of runners including newly emerged were removed for better yield and quality fruits at 60 days after transplanting. Leaf area was measured by non-destructive method using CL-202 Leaf Area Meter (USA). Mature leaf (from 4th node) were measured all time. Fruit length and diameter were measured using Digital Caliper -515 (DC-515). Brix percentages were measured by Portable Refractometer (ERMA, Tokyo, Japan). Collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C computer package programme. Mean for every treatments were calculated and analysis of variance for each one of characters was performed by F–test (Variance Ratio). Difference between treatments was assessed by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Finally it can be concluded that vermicompost performs as best organic matter for strawberry in terms of all parameters (except plant height). Looking upon the above circumstances it can be articulated that vermicompost was the most outstanding organic matters for growth, yield and quality attributes of strawberry.
