Drinking Water Quality in Some Selected Sites of Chandpur, Manikgonj and Greater Faridpur Districts in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted to determine water quality for drinking purpose of Chandpur, Manikgonj and Greater Faridpur area during January, 2008. Water samples were collected from 21 hand tube wells, 3 deep tube wells , 4 shallow tube wells, 5 ponds and 3 rivers for chemical analyses which included Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Fe and As. Regards to hardness (HT), waters were categorized as ‘soft’ and ‘moderately hard’ in quality. According to drinking water standard, the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Mn and Fe were within the ‘safe limit’ causing no ionic toxicity. Arsenic toxicity was detected in some ground water samples. Among the water sources, all surface water (pond and river) were found free from arsenic and other toxic element contamination and was most suitable for drinking in respect of chemical criteria. Among the ground water sources, deep tube well were found suitable compared to hand tube well and shallow tube well. Correlation among water parameters were studied and found positive correlation between As & Fe which indicates that arsenic concentration in water increases with the increase in iron concentration in the study area.

Objectives:

1. The present study has been conducted to assess the quality of drinking water for categorizing them on the basis of their chemical compositions.

Methodology:

Investigation was conducted to determine water quality for drinking purpose of Chandpur, Manikgonj and Greater Faridpur area during January, 2008. Water samples were collected from 21 hand tube wells, 3 deep tube wells, 4 shallow tube wells, 5 ponds and 3 rivers for chemical analyses which included Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Fe and As. The depth of the tube wells ranged from 40 to 1200 feet and the duration of irrigation was from 1 to 30 years. Water samples were collected in 250 ml plastic bottle. The ground water samples were collected at running condition of the tube wells and surface water samples were drawn from midstream at 0-15 cm below the surface of pond and river. The collected water samples were tightly sealed as early as possible to avoid exposure to air. Standard water sampling techniques were followed. All the water samples were colourless, odourless and tasteless having no turbidity and did not contain any suspended material at the time of collection. The chemical analyses were conducted at the Soil Science Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Sodium was determined by flame emission spectrophotometer. Calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese were analyzed directly by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Arsenic was analyzed directly by atomic absorption spectrophotometer with hydride generator. Hardness (HT) values were computed as follows: Hardness, HT = 2.5 x Ca + 4.1 x Mg, Where, ionic concentrations were expressed as mgL^-1.
