Diversity in the Cultivated Chilli (capsicum L.) from Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Diversity in chilli (Capsicum spp.) of Bangladesh with respect to fruit position, shape and size, colour and pungency of fruits has been investigated. Seventeen cultivars of chilli collected from different agroclimetic regions of Bangladesh were grown at the Jahangirnagar University campus during crop seasons and then characters have been recorded. All cultivars, except one produced solitary fruits. Fruits before ripe were of three coloured- white, green and blackish purple. Both shape and size of fruits in different accessions were markedly variable. The shape ranged from round to heart- shaped through fusiform. Three types of fruits were recognized: small (1-2.9 cm), medium (3-6.9cm) and large (7-15cm). Pungency test with the fruits resulted 15 accessions either moderately or highly pungent while remaining two are non-pungent.

Objectives:

To analyze and characterize the various accessions of cultivated chilli.

Methodology:

Seventeen local cultivars of chilli included in the experiment were collected from 9 different agroclimatic areas of Bangladesh and these cultivars were numbered as accessions J.U.-1 to J.U.-17 as accessions. Seeds of the seventeen accessions were sown in 1995 in the experimental field of Botany Department, Jahangirnagar University. Seeds were soaked for 24 hours before sowing. Row to row and plant to plant distance were 60 and 40cm respectively. Cultural practices were regularly done. Field was kept free weeds. Watering was done to keep desired soil moisture. The fertilizer treatment included TSP 0.50 kg, MP 0.30 kg, Urea 1 kg amd cowdung 30 kg per decimal. TSP and cowdung were applied during field preparation and MP was applied later on.

In this experimen, three types of fruits were recognized: small (1-2.9 cm), medium (3-6.9cm) and large (7-15cm). Pungency test with the fruits resulted 15 accessions either moderately or highly pungent while remaining two are non-pungent. It is concluded that in absence of taxonomically sound treatment of the various taxa belonging to the genus Capsicum, the domesticated varieties can be represented by their fancy names or by their accession numbers only. Monographic revision of the genus on world basis is urgently needed.
