Carbon Content of Humus in Some Freshwater Wetland Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Carbon content of humus in soils of six freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district was assessed during the year, 2000. Total organic carbon content of the soils varied from 0.64% to 2.66%, humic acid carbon from 0.014% to 0.216%, fulvic acid carbon from 0.079% to 0.415% and humin carbon from 0.191% to 2.482% on the basis of soil weight. In general, fulvic acid carbon dominated over humic acid carbon in the extractable fractions. Carbon content of the humin fraction dominated over alkali-pyrophosphate extractable fraction. Of total soil organic carbon, humic acid, fulvic acid and humin carbon contents contributed 1.68% to 20.00%, 3.87% to 26.57% and 56.20% to 93.31 %, respectively. Significant variations were observed in total organic and humin carbon contents of soil with seasons.

Objectives:

1. The present investigation was done to study the total humus content in six freshwater wetland soils of greater Dhaka district, Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Six freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district were selected for this investigation. Investigations were done in three seasons i.e. summer (March to May), rainy season (July to September) and winter (November to January). The extraction and fractionation of humus were carried out. Alkali-pyrophosphate extractable total organic carbon and humic acid carbon were determined. Fulvic acid carbon (or more correctly, carbon of the organic substances remaining in the acid solution after the humic acids have been precipitated from the extract) was found by subtracting humic acid carbon from total organic carbon in the extract. Humin carbon was determined by subtracting the total extractable fractions from the organic carbon of soils. Surface drainage, ground water seepage, and waste water - discharge of Jahanara Imam Hall and Pritilata Hall of Jahangirnagar University. Surface drainage, and automobile discharge, wastewater discharge of Kamaluddin Hall, S.S.B Hall and Fajilatunnesa Hall of Jahangimagar University. Surface drainage and ground water seepage. Washouts of garage and surface drainage + Discharge and effluents of EPZ (Dhaka), nearby + paddy fields, petrol pumps and poultry farms washouts. Surfagce drainage, and paddy fields washouts + Two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done to evaluate the variation of total organic, humic acid, fulvic acid and humin carbon with sites and seasons in soils of six freshwater wetlands. Duncan's Multiple Range Test was performed to identify significantly different pairs when nuIl hypothesis was rejected.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no significant variation of total humus carbon, humic acid carbon and fulvic acid carbon in soils of these wetlands due to seasons. But significant variations (P=0.05) were found in total organic and humin carbon contents due to seasons. The most abundant rooted attached hydrophytes in the wetlands. S, B and N were Nymphaea rubra, Ottelia alismoides, Nymphaea pubescens, Nymphaea nouchalli and Sagitta ria guayanensis, respectively during rainy season.
