Release Pattern of Added Sulphur in Some Soils Under Aerobic Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An incubation study was carried out under aerobic condition to study the effect of gypsum-S on release of SO₄-S in six soil types of Bangladesh. The pattern of release of extractable sulphur was not consistent during the 90 dyas incubation time. The meneralization of S tended to increase with incubation time and reached maximum at 45 days of incubation in most of the soils and thereafter it declined. The rate of S release quite varied among soils types and was highest in Acid Basin Clay soils. The rate of S series from six different soil types were maximum (279-384 ppm) at 40-60 ppm added S.

Objectives:

To study the release pattern of added sulphur in different types of soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

An incubation study under aerobic condition was carried out in the Laboratory of Soil Science Division. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Joydebpur, Gazipur for a period of three months. Six soil samples from six General soil types of Bangladesh viz. Acid Basin Clay (Khilgaon series). Acid Sulphate Soil (Chokoria series). Calcareous Brown Floodplain soil (Gopalpur series). Grey Terrace Soil (Chhiata series). Brown Hill Soil (Barkal series) and on-Calcareous Grey Floodplain Soil (Silmondi series) were used for this experiment. The soil samples were air-dried and gently ground to pass through a 2 mm sieve. An amount of 200 g of soil from each of the Soil Types under study were taken in plastic beakers and sulphur at the rate of 0, I0, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 ppm were added in the form of gypsum to a set of treatments. The treatments were triplicate and the incubation was carried out at room temperature for 90 days. Pre-determined quantities of distilled water were added to maintain the ir moisture content of soils at field capacity level. Soil samplings were done at 15-day intervals of incubation up to 90 days. The soil samples were dried in air and analyzed for available sulphur following calcium dihydrogen phosphate [Ca (H₂PO₄)₂] extraction method.

Achievement/Findings:

The release of sulphate-S at 60 days ranged from 87 to 312% over control. As usual the sulphate-S declined at 75 days which was more or less sharp and rose again up to 90 days of incubation. Release of sulphur in creased up to the rate of 40 ppm for Brown Hill Soil and 50 ppm for Non-Calcareous Grey Floodplain Soil. Sulphate production under aerobic condition was maximum in Acid Basin Clay Soil. The study indicated that the pattern of release of extractable sulphur follows available trend in different soil types. The mean rate of sulphur release tended to increase over incubation reaching maximum (292-385 ppm) at 30-45 days in most of the soil. Supplementary S (40-60 ppm) addition might be necessary for crops with longer duration under deficient condition. The minarelization of S tended to increase with incubation time and reached maximum at 45 days of incubation in most of the soils and thereafter it declined. The rate of S release quite varied among soils types and was highest in Acid Basin Clay soils.
