Effect of Combined Inoculation of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium on Nutrient Content and Uptake by Chickpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different combinations of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), Rhizobium and NP on the N, P and K content and uptake in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). The experiment was designed with 14 treatments viz. Control, P, Rhizobium (R), AM, R + AM, R + NP, R + N, R + P, AM + NP, AM + N, AM + P, R + AM + NP, R + AM + N and R + AM + P. Both content and uptake were highly influenced by dual inoculation with or without NP application. The maximum content and uptake of N and P by shoot was recorded at 50%, flowering stage. On the other hand, the K content gradually decreased, again the K uptake was higher at 50% flowering stage compared to the other stages. The highest content of N (2.80%), P (0.62%) and K (1.30%) by seeds were recorded with R+AM+NP. The uptake of these nutrients by the crop at all stages was also recorded by the same treatment.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of dual inoculation of AM and Rhizobium on the nutrient content and uptake of chickpea.

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). Joydebpur, Gazipur with chickpea (cv. BARI Chhola-5). Bulk soil was collected from the chickpea growing area of BARI farm and was sterilized by solarization. Ten kilogram of sterilized soils were put in a series of earthen pots. Nitrogen @ 50 kg N/ha from urea and phosphorus @ 50 kg P₂O₅/ha from triple superphosphate were used as NP treatment. Potassium @ 50 kg K₂0/ha from muriate of potash was applied as basal dose. The experiment was laid out in a complete randomized design (CRD) with 14 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were T₁ : Control, T₂ : Nitrogen + Phosphorus (NP), T₃ : Rhizobium (R), T₄: Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM),T₅ : R + AM, T₆ : R + NP, T₇ : R + N, T₈ : R + P, T₉ : AM + NP, T_I0 : AM + N, T₁₁ : AM + P, TI2 : R + AM + NP, T_I3: R+AM + N and T_I4 R+AM+P. Roots of cassia (Cassia tora) with rhizosphcre soil were used as AM inoculum. Twenty gram inoculum was applied per pot. A layer of inoculum was first placed in each pot filled with sterilized soil and was covered with a thin layer of 2 cm soil in which seeds were sown.

Five seeds of chickpea treated with sodium hypochlorite for surface sterilization were sown in each pot. One ml liquid inoculum containing rhizobial strain RCa-220 having 10⁹cells/ml was used in each pot. After germination of seeds, two healthy plants were allowed to grow per pot, others were uprooted. Intercultural operations (weeding and mulching) were done when necessary to ensure the normal growth of the crop. Chickpea was harvested at full maturity. Data on different plant variables were recorded 3 times viz.at preflowering, 50% flowering and maturity stages. The shoot and grain samples were analyzed for N, P and K contents and their uptake was computed using nutrient content and yield data.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears that dual inoculation of chickpea with AM and Rhizobium (R) was better than that of single inoculation. Dual inoculation in presence of N and P fertilizers showed better performance than that of dual inoculation alone in respect of nutrient content and uptake. Inoculation of chickpea with AM fungi increased P uptake
