Effect of Maturity Period and Harvesting Time on Quality and Yield in Breeder Seed of Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur, to determine the effect of maturity period and harvesting time on the quality and yield of rice breeder seed. For this study, BR16, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan55 were grown during Boro 2011-12 season with five treatments viz. harvest at, i) 15 DAF, ii) 20 DAF, iii) 25 DAF, iv) 30 DAF and v) 35 DAF. The performance were found worse under harvesting at 15 DAF in all varieties. However, 1000 grain weight (26.11g), yield per panicle (4.85g) and vigor index (7569) were found high in BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan55 and BR16, respectively under harvesting at 35 DAF . The highest germination (83.33%) were found in BRRI dhan55 and in BRRI dhan36, respectively, under 30 DAF harvesting. It may be concluded that harvesting at 30 to 35 days after flowering (DAF) was found to be suitable for all of the grain characters in all variety. These times are suitable for quality seed production of all tested varieties; however it should be mentioned that BRRI dhan47 can be harvested after 25 DAF for medium yield and quality in contingent situation.

Objectives:

Study was undertaken -

To evaluate the performance of rice varieties through different harvesting times to get quality breeder seed with high yield.
To know the speed of grain filling.
To know the physiological maturity period of the varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Boro 2011-12 seasons at BRRI farm, Gazipur to study the effect of maturity period and harvesting time on the quality and yield breeder seed production of rice. For this, BR16, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan55 during Boro 2011-12 seasons were transplanted with a spacing of 20 cm between both the rows and plants for determining the effect of maturity period and harvesting time on the seed quality and yield in breeder seed of rice. The unit plot size was 2.8 m x 1.2 m and 3.8 x 1.2 m respectively and treatments were harvest just i) 15 days after flowering (DAF), ii) 20 DAF, iii) 25 DAF, iv) 30 DAF and v) 35 DAF were transplanted. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 kg/ha NPK in T. Aman and @ 100:60:40 kg/ha NPK in Boro seasons along with 70 kg/ha gypsum and 10 kg/ha zinc sulfate. All 100 kg TSP, 80 kg MoP, 70 kg gypsum and 10 kg zinc sulfate per ha were applied at the time of final land preparation. Full protections were taken against disease, weed and insect pest. Urea was applied as top dressing in three splits during tillering, panicle initiation and flowering stages. Irrigation was done according to the recommendation. Flowering time was recorded when 50% panicles flowered. Five plants of each treatment were randomly selected from each of the plot. The panicles were selected on the first day of their flowering. Samples were collected at five times i.e. 15 days after flowering (T₁), 20 days after flowering (T₂), 25 days after flowering (T₃), 30 days after flowering (T₄), and 35 days after flowering (T₅). Data were recorded on filled grain per panicle, unfilled grain per panicle, 1000 grain weight (g), dry matter content/panicle (g), yield per panicle (g), germination (%), and seedling vigor index. The characters were analyzed for variance to determine the effect of maturity period and harvesting time on the quality and yield in breeder seed of rice.

Achievement/Findings:

Harvesting at 30 to 35 days after flowering (DAF) was found to be suitable for all of the grain characters of the tested varieties. These times are suitable for quality breeder seed production. And it should be mentioned that all varieties especially BRRI dhan47 can be harvested after 25 DAF for medium yield and seed quality in contingent situation. Since maturity period and harvesting time is a so much important for quality breeder seed production and escape from contingent situation, therefore, further trials need to be done for more perfection and confirmation of the results for recommendations.
