Screening for Cold Tolerance of Advance Rice Genotypes at Seedling Stage During Boro 2002-03.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out through cultural solution to find out the best advance breeding lines which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Shoot height of rice genotypes were stunted due to cold. Among the tested rice genotypes HBIV attained significantly the highest (35.03 cm) shoot height than other tested rice genotypes. Although cumulative root length of rice genotypes were reduced due to cold, some advance rice genotypes namely BR6460-126-1-1, BR6161-R1-5, M92-2, BR6476-17-B-3, BR6135-3B-11-2-2 and BR6342-63-2B-1 produced cumulative root length of more than 500 cm. Significantly the longest cumulative root length was obtained from HBIV (838.09 cm) than other tested rice genotypes whereas, it was 407.44 cm for BRRI dhan36. Most of the advance breeding lines and their checks BRRI dhan36 and HBIV attained seedling strength of more than 3.0 mg/cm while BR14 had about 21 mg/cm. The highest seedling strength was recorded in a local rice genotype HBIV.

Objectives:

To identify advance breeding lines which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of 55 advance breeding lines along with check varieties namely Hbj.BIV and BRRI dhan36 were sown on 28 January, 2003 in netted bed attached with styro-foam sheet floating in a tray containing full strength culture solution. The pH level of culture solution were maintained at 5.0 throughout the experimental period. Each entry were sown in a line and 20 seedlings in each line were maintained. Seedlings were grown up to 30 days. On February 27, 2003, data on seedling height, root length, root number, leaf number (stage) and shoot dry weight and percent mortality were recorded. Seedling strength (mg/cm) was calculated using the following formulae:

Strength (mg/cm) = Shoot wt (mg)/ shoot height (cm)

The scoring system for plant height, root length and seedling strength are as follows:

Shoot height (cm)

>30 = 1

25-30 = 3

20-25 = 5

15-20 = 7

10-15 = 9

Cumulative root length

>500 cm = 1

400-500 = 3

300-400 = 5

200-300 = 7

100-200 = 9

Seedling strength (mg/cm)

>4.0 = 1

3.5-4.0 = 3

3.0-3.5 = 5

2.5-3.0 = 7

2.0-2.5 = 9

Achievement/Findings:

Out of 55 entries 28 were selected for cold tolerance at seedling stage having mean score of less than 5. However, XUANS09, CT950612-10-1-1-M-3P-M, M92-2 and BR6724-36-7-6 showed mean score of 3 indicating them as cold tolerant rice genotypes at seedling stage.
