Screening for Cold Tolerance of BRRI Developed Rice Genotypes at Seedling Stage During Boro 2001-02.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out through Yoshidas’ culture solution to find out the suitable BRRI developed rice varieties which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Seedling strength among rice varieties varied significantly due to cold. The highest seedling strength (49.2 mg/cm) was recorded from HBIV. A ?cold tolerant BRRI developed variety BRRI dhan36 and another variety BR26 showed moderate cold tolerance at seedling stage. Other varieties BR1, BR14, BR15, BR27, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan36 also showed some sorts of tolerance at seedling stage.

Objectives:

To identify BRRI developed rice varieties which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of 24 BRRI developed rice varieties namely BR1, BR2, BR3, BR6, BR7, BR8, BR9, BR12, BR14, BR15, BR16, BR17, BR18, BR19, BR20, BR21, BR24, BR26, BRRI dhan27, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan35, BRRI dhan36, and HB IV were sown on 01 January 2002 in netted bed attached with styro-foam sheet floating in a tray containing full strength culture solution. The pH level of culture solution was maintained at 5.0 throughout the experimental period. Each entry was sown in a line and 20 seedlings in each line were maintained. Seedlings were grown up to 46 days. On February 16, 2002, data on seedling height, cumulative root length, shoot and root dry weight were recorded. Seedling strength (mg/cm) was calculated using the following formula:

Strength (mg/cm) = Shoot wt (mg)/ shoot height (cm)

The scoring system for seedling strength was as follows:

Seedling strength (mg/cm)

>45 = 1

40-45 = 3

35-40 = 5

30-35 = 7

25-30 = 9

Achievement/Findings:

A local variety Hbj.BIV had the highest seedling strength whereas, BRRI developed cold tolerant variety BRRI dhan36 and also BR26 showed moderate cold tolerance at seedling stage. Other varieties BR1, BR14, BR15, BR27, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan36 also showed some sorts of tolerance at seedling stage.
